When did your breech baby turn?

I've had my 27 week growth scan today. Everything else is absolutely fine, he's measuring in the middle of the centile whatsit and my BP has actually gone down! I know there's plenty of time for him to turn, I was just wondering when other mums' babies did and whether you could feel it - and if so, what's it like? Is it uncomfortable or painful? Will I even notice? If he doesn't turn, and I'm classed as high risk due to BMI, does that automatically mean c-section?

I had an elcs anyway but my dd turned two days prior, yes I knew about it, yes it was very uncomfy but she did weigh 10.9lb :)

Mine was breach at 28 weeks, has turned now at 34 weeks. I reckon it turned about 1-2 weeks ago, judging by movement changes. Didnt have any pain or even notice it happening. If he doesn't turn you'll be scheduled for a section, but they'll scan up until the day of section in case he turns.

Threesoundslikealot · 19/03/2015 21:24

Questions answered.

Mine turned at 35+6, the day before my 36 week scan.

I know this because I felt it and it was rather uncomfortable, to put it mildly. I was waiting for a bus and ended up bent double.

There is ages and ages for your baby to turn. There's still enough room for him to be swimming around in there. My baby that was breech at 32 weeks was head down at that point.

If he goes stay breech, it will depend entirely on your hospital how easy it would be to plan a vaginal birth. Some hospitals will do them but lots routinely don't. If you felt strongly you could talk to the Supervisor of Midwives and see what your options were.

I was breech at 28 weeks, started doing the recommended exercises and baby was turned by next app. Check out spinning babies, or just kneel on floor, bum in air, head and shoulders on the ground, this allows space and encourages them to move. I didn't feel when baby turned. A friend of mine was booked in for the procedure when baby is moved around manually and baby turned in the waiting room before the app. She is 35 weeks, so it can happen at any time, right up to the last minute.

Thanks all! So basically, anything could happen Grin I don't feel particularly strongly about a vaginal birth, except I'd prefer to give it a go. But if I need a c-section then I'll take the advice of the experts.

My DD didn't turn and my waters went 4 weeks early so I had an ELCS

findingherfeet · 20/03/2015 10:40

I can't remember exactly but it was definitely between the 35 and 38 week appointment, didn't notice the actual turn but it became very obvious because I started getting kicks to the ribs (having had the quietest, kick free pregnancy till then)

Threesoundslikealot · 20/03/2015 20:37

Depending on the type of breech (frank breech being the most straightforward) NICE guidelines are about to change to encourage more vaginal breech births. It's been known for quite a while that the original study on outcomes that started the mass move to C sections didn't really justify the abandonment of vaginal birth. So don't assume a vaginal birth is necessarily unsafe!

kiwiscantfly · 20/03/2015 20:41

First one didn't and I had an ELCS and the second turned at around 33 weeks I think, I didn't feel it and it didn't really matter because I had another ELCS anyway.

DefiniteMaybe · 20/03/2015 20:42

Dd1 was breech until around 35 weeks, and oh yes I felt her turn! I was lying in bed and she did an almighty somersault it was very strange.
Dd2 didn't turn and we didn't realise she was breech until she was on her way out.

JethroTull · 20/03/2015 20:45

Mine didn't. I tried everything. He wasn't for moving!!

LifeHuh · 20/03/2015 20:54

DD was breech through the entire pregnancy until the appointment when we went to book a date for c section at which point she had turned. Can't remember after all thus time exactly when that was- 35/36 weeks? For reasons I won't go into no- one thought she'd turn and I'd been told from early on I'd need a c section - so I'm then in shock as I knew nothing about vaginal delivery as I hadn't been paying attention to that part of the antenatal classes Smile

Millie3030 · 20/03/2015 21:00

He never turned despite an EVC and him painfully trying to a couple of times, but didn't. 10lb baby then delivered via c section.

NaughtyRed82 · 20/03/2015 21:00

My daughter was breech and then kept changing position a lot so sometimes she'd be breech and sometimes when midwife checked she'd be the right way round Confused Later in pregnancy I'm pretty sure she was breech until the week or two before I had her and was really relived when midwife told me that she was the right way around and that she'd dropped so was no chance of her turning again, so it can happen late on in a pregnancy so don't stress yourself out too much worrying about baby being breech. Mid wife will be able to give advice too if worrying

wowiesis111 · 20/03/2015 22:36

My ds1 was dinky and laid transverse for ages. Although he was small and I with me being small I didn't feel him switch to head down. Guess he had plenty of room.
I panicked about having to have a cs and stressed for ages about it and two weeks prior he turned. All that worry for nothing.
This time I'm hoping the same happens although this time with my placenta as it's 'low lying'. Fingers crossed that moves now or cs will have to be booked. I'm not worrying this time around as praying it moves like a lot of them do.

Ps I didn't have to have csection first time around in the end. He moved and stayed moved.
Hope your little one moves for you.

CunningCat · 20/03/2015 22:40

I had twins. Twin one breach so emcs.

BotBotticelli · 21/03/2015 10:48

Ds1 turned at around 31 weeks. He did it when I got in the swimming pool....it was a weird, roiling feeling that I hadn't felt before and it only happened once in the whole pregnancy so I presume that's when he turned.

It was an odd, uncomfortable feeling that lasted a few seconds

Teeste · 21/03/2015 10:54

Thanks everyone! I'm not worrying just yet. The consultant said everyone she'd seen that day at my gestation had a breech baby, so it seems very normal. I actually quite like the mental image of him being all snuggled up to me that way round, if that doesn't sound too daft! I'll probably feel differently if he's still that way round at 36 weeks, though :/

I like the swimming tip - might give that a go. If I can still fit into my cozzie, that is!

At 41+5.

ChatEnOeuf · 21/03/2015 16:18

33-34w, and it hurt a lot. Tiny bump with a slightly squashed baby inside though. Felt like she was using my ribcage as leverage!

autumnboys · 21/03/2015 16:23

Ds2 turned sometime between scans at 37 & 38 weeks. I was totally unaware. He was born at 38+2, weighing 7lb 3.5. All three of mine were breech on and off, you've got plenty of time for things to change. Good luck!
