Flying during very early pregnancy

I was wondering if any of you pregnant ladies flew abroad on holiday during your very early pregnancy? And if so, did you encounter any problems? I am trying to conceive and going away on holiday to the Middle East next month (seven hour flight). I just can't put TTC on hold any more for one event or another but am scared as I had a chemical pregnancy, miscarrying in my fifth week a year ago. Thanks for any advice.

I travelled to the US at 9 wks and was fine, apart from the jetlag on the return not helping with the morning sickness.
Just make sure you keep hydrated and move about as often as you can, really the same things anyone gets told to do on a long flight.

My midwife said there wasn't any greater risk during early pregancy than when not

I flew at 5 weeks on a 6 hour flight. All fine, I think my legs might have swollen up a bit more than usual but I didn't walk around enough, and I had on new flight socks, so it could have been that.

I took a couple of baby aspirin before the flight to keep the blood circulating as I'm at risk of clotting issues, and drank lots of water. Just do the usual (avoid salty, v carby foods etc) move around enough and you should be fine

I went to Beijing (10hrs) at 8 weeks. Tbh it was harder than I thought with nausea and tiredness but I still had a lovely time. I didnt experience the culture as much as I would have had I not been expecting (couldn't risk eating things unless I knew what they were etc)
I think if you are going next month if you do fall pregnant you will miss out on most of the nausea and tiredness for the holiday as it tends to begin around 6 weeks or so (mine didn't start until 3 days before my holiday)

I did (although granted it was only to Dublin and back, so not far!). All totally fine, although I did feel a lot more nauseous than usual.

Lots of women have fertility treatment overseas and return home with their longed for babies on board. It is fine.

Don't worry artylady I'm sure you'll be fine, I was going on holiday the day after I found out I was pregnant and each way was a 6 hour flight followed by a 45 min flight. I am going to be flying in April too at 14 weeks and plan to go on holiday in July as well before I get to the point where I have to have a doctors note to fly. I live in the middle east actually! Have a great holiday!

I live in the Middle East too but spend my summers back in the UK so I'm having to time it so I'm not too much of a whale by the time we need to fly there or back Grin I know lots of people who have flown all through their pregnancy (including the wife of a pilot who flew at 37 weeks with her 3rd child!) and they were all fine. Just make sure you get to relax when you get there Smile

Existing data do not confirm increased reproductive risks for otherwise healthy pregnant women traveling by air. In a cross-sectional survey among current and former flight attendants, Lauria et al (Reproductive disorders and pregnancy outcomes among female flight attendants) did not detect higher rates of miscarriage associated with active work.

Flew to Aus at 7 weeks and back at 11. The only thing l noticed was l really struggled with jet lag which l normally dont. And my ms was terrible!

nehagarg · 20/03/2015 10:43

I was on a 10 hour flight to Miami and Back before I found out I was 5 weeks pregnant. Didnt really notice much difference. :)

artylady14 · 20/03/2015 18:25

Thanks for all this. I am not even pregnant and worrying just because of the miscarriage I had at 5 weeks. I am glad you are all healthy through your pregnancies.
