Diastasis Recti during pregnancy

Hi all,
I wondered whether anyone else had experience of diastasis recti during pregnancy and how it can affect giving birth.

I separated my ab muscles at 4 months into my pregnancy (now approaching 5 months) and I'm really worried. I can find lots of information about it happening during birth, however I am already having problems getting up from a lying position or going to the toilet now as I can't use my muscles in that area at all. I'm worried I might have problems giving birth.

Any help appreciated, my midwife wasn't much help as she had not come across it before.

Your midwife will have surely come across it at some point alot of pregnant women get this.

Go and see your GP and ask to be referred to a Physio. They may just send you a leaflet out with some exercises to try which will help.

I don't think there's much you can do whilst pregnant as your belly is only going to get bigger.
I went to the drs today because I thought mine had split and not gone back together.Apparently there is a significant split, have no idea at what point during my pregnancy it happened but I delivered twins absolutely fine. My girls are 10 months now and I've been referred for physio

Hi Halestone - she had never come across it this early in pregnancy before and said just to leave it and see if it heals on its own. I get the impression this won't happen though! I might try going to the GP for a physio referral though thankyou.

Slightlyinsane - so good to hear you managed to give birth ok, some have suggested I might need a c-section because I have no strength to push down there anymore
