Hospital have decided to induce me Friday due to my blood pressure (not due til the 29th)
I have to be their for 8.30 , I'm expecting it will take a long time so Dp is bringing me and then I'm sending him to work for a few hours as he will just annoy me if sat their plus theirs no point in us both sat waiting .

I had a sweep an hour or so ago but if that doesn't work , what can I expect to happen ?
I have been told the basics of want happens but I'd rather first hand experience tbh & also is their anything in particular I will need/want to take - especially to while away the hours .

Am I allowed to eat/drink or not ?

Panicking slightly , can you tell Blush Blush

I was allowed to eat and drink.

It can be looooooooooong. Take biscuits and magazines and try not to kill your DP when he says stupid things that may have just been my DH though

We arrived. Baby monitored. Pessary inserted. Left for 12 hours then cervix checked. Baby monitored. Left for another 12, then checked. Baby monitored. Another 12 then checked. Baby monitored. Cervix hadn't done anything. No contractions etc.
I was able to move around as normal, eat & drink. You're just bored waiting.
For me it didn't work. I found the internals awful. Incredibly painful. Crying during them. They were in a rush to get him out so got me in for an induction but after 36hours of nothing they wanted to start the process again. I refused (if they wanted him out bad enough to start induction then bloody get him out after all that time) and that's why I got a section. DS was 11lb 7 and undiagnosed breech so I'm so glad I refused and got a section.
But hopefully some people will come along with success stories.

They might not induce you on Friday. I went in at 39 weeks for an induction and wasn't induced (because there wasn't space on delivery suite) for 4 days.

Other than that, it was completely fine and lovely and once we actually got going, labour was 4 hours and I recovered far better and far more quickly after it than after my home birth a few years before!

StrawberryTallCake · 18/03/2015 19:15

I asked for gas and air for pessary insertions and water breaking because I'm not a big fan of the mw putting her whole hand up my whatsit. That helped.

First induction - pessaries and gave birth around 6 hours later (17 days overdue)

Second induction - pessaries then womb over stimulated, left overnight, waters broken then baby arrived after 3-4 hours. (on or just before due date but I have elephant pregnancies and she would have stayed in for at least another three weeks I'm sure)

I believe the drip is given if water breaking doesn't work. Make sure you aren't constipated either as that caused my over stimulated womb without progress I think Blush

BloomingOrBallooning · 18/03/2015 19:15

Turned up at 9:30am. They talked me through the process and did an internal I was 4cms dilated so they broke my waters (not painful) & left me for a few hours to see if contractions would start. They didn't so they set the drip up, a couple of hours later the contractions were intense, coming 7 in ten minutes, then baby was out in about 4 pushes.

Fishandjam · 18/03/2015 19:16

My main comment is: don't reject the idea of an epidural. I found syntocinon induction incredibly painful (I was induced due to obstetric cholestasis with both my DC) and I genuinely don't think I could have done it without the pain relief and kept sane. It doesn't hurt for everyone though Smile

StrawberryTallCake · 18/03/2015 19:16

Ah yes the constant monitoring can be annoying but I didn't have the monitor tied on most of the time the mw just listened in now and then, I wish I'd gone in the birth pool and been more firm about that. Be firm about your choices even though you may be there a while, I worried too much about upsetting people.

FelixFelix · 18/03/2015 19:18

I was induced at 37 weeks. The worst part is waiting around.

I went in on the Friday morning at 9am. Pessary inserted at 10am and nothing happened at all. At around 8pm I started getting very slight contractions and at 11pm I was examined and was 2cm gone. Advised they could break my waters but then there was a massive influx of ladies in labour so I didn't actually get my waters broken until 3pm on the Saturday afternoon. Walked around for an hour and nothing happened so was hooked up to the drip. Contractions were very painful very quickly so I requested an epidural as early as possible. So glad I did as I don't think I'd have coped with the pain. The only annoying thing was that I had the drip and epidural in and had to be monitored constantly due to being induced so I wasn't able to be mobile at all. Was left to contract as they said it would be a while, so I sent my DP home for a shower and to collect clean clothes etc. Was examined at 11pm and midwife could see the head so we had to call DP back quickly! Dd was doing well so I was left for a bit for her to move down on her own, then three pushes later she arrived at 1.53am on the Sunday.

Totally agree with you sending your DH to work. Mine just did my head in. He refused to go home to slept on a tiny faux leather chair which he stuck to because it was really hot Grin

Take lots of magazines/books and snacks as you may be in there for a while. Think about pain relief if you end up being on the drip as it really ramps up your contractions. Also I had a sweep a couple of days before too and nothing happened!

Good luck Smile

hodgepodgepanda · 18/03/2015 19:22

Gooo I'm sending him to work so I don't kill him Grin

I've been induced twice 1st time went in baby was monitored gel was inserted baby was monitored again for an hour was then left to my own devices they suggest walking round the ward or for a walk to the hospital shop or cafe. Contractions started almost immediately every 5 min although not that strong. Was examined after 6 hrs was 4cm dilated took to delivery suite baby was born 3 hours later. 2nd time again was monitored then had gel and monitored again unfortunately nothing happened I was monitored and examined again after 6 hrs and was given another gel. This time contractions started every 4/5 min but not lasting very long after a few hours contractions got a lot stronger and quicker was examined 3cm took to delivery where I quickly dilated they broke my water and baby was born 3 pushes later. All in all both my inductions were very positive experiences although they do say it doesn't always work 1st time and can take up to 5 days for baby to come 1 thing for sure is once they start induction process you won't be leaving without a baby so take plenty books mags snacks ipad etc incase your in a while. Good luck

Hobby2014 · 18/03/2015 19:50

Don't panic about a section OP. In my notes it says I've had an emergency section due to failed induction but it wasn't emergency. I walked up to theatre, it was perfectly fine, no problems, it was so relaxed, chilled, I recovered well. It really was ok.
Hope all goes well x

weeblueberry · 18/03/2015 20:05

I'm interested in how long women are given for the pessary to work actually. I'm hoping I won't need induction this time but obviously might. With a toddler, sitting for days in the hospital while nothing happens doesn't sound ideal. Envy can you ask for the drip if, after a certain time, the pessary hasn't worked?

Hobby2014 · 18/03/2015 20:08

To the person that asked about going straight to drop- Drip can't be started until waters are broken. Waters can't be broken until you've dilated 1-2cm. So Pessary needs to dilate you.
I didn't dilate after 36 hours of Pessary but couldn't go through it again so had a section.

Hobby2014 · 18/03/2015 20:08

Drip not drop

weeblueberry · 18/03/2015 20:28

Cool - thank you. With this being my second I've read your initial dilation can happen much quicker so have my fingers crossed :)

anythingbutinsomnia · 18/03/2015 20:29

I was meant to go in at 8am on a Friday morning, got a call at 7am saying they were busy so to wait at home. Eventually called back in at 2pm. Went on monitoring machine, then had pessary put in (which I didn't find too bad), then another 30 min on monitor before being sent home. Started getting twinges around 8pm which got steadily more uncomfortable. Went back to hospital to be checked at 4am to be told that it wasn't contractions, just my uterus being irritated by the pessary and I wasn't dilating at all. Home again by 6am by which time pains had stopped. Sat around twiddling thumbs until 2pm, when it was back to the hospital (they'll only let you stay at home up to 24 hours after first pessary). Eventually saw doctor at around 7pm who did examination and managed to get my cervix open to 1-2cm. Had to wait until 10am next morning for a room on delivery ward to become available. I had my waters broken at 11am, then got sent walking round the hospital for 2 hours. still no proper contractions so was put on the drip by 2pm which actually got things going. Had epidural at 5:30pm (can't describe what a relief that was!) and was fully dilated by midnight. DD was eventually born with the help of forceps at 03:22am.

hodgepodgepanda · 18/03/2015 20:54

anything that sound horrendous having to go back and fourth all the time

anythingbutinsomnia · 18/03/2015 21:44

It wasn't fun but was first baby so at least it only disrupted me & DH. Not sure how we would manage a repeat with DC2 but I'm getting an ELCS this time thankfully

TheBooMonster · 20/03/2015 16:05

hope your induction is going well OP

With DD I was given the pessary at about 3pm, started getting twinges at about 7pm, and by about 3am (I think, I'd have to check the maternity record to know what time it was for sure, but that's the only timing I'm wobbly on) I got a bit delirious with pain and removed it myself, I hadn't dilated at all, and all they would give me was gas and air which wasn't helping at all, my contractions didn't stop or even slow as a result of it coming out like they expected though, I was examined a little before 7am and was less than 1cm dilated, baby was born at 7:12am. I had quite an unusual reaction to the pessary which we think is due to my Hypermobility Syndrome...

This time round I'm being induced at 37 weeks, so it will be interesting to see how long it takes second time round.

WorryWurta · 20/03/2015 16:28

Following as 41 weeks now and will be induced at 42 if required. I noticed a few ladies saying they were sent home or delayed induction cos ward was busy - would they do that even if you were 42 weeks plus? Scared about the baby's wellbeing if they can't fit me in and we have to wait past the 42 week mark...

TheBooMonster · 21/03/2015 02:18

worry I think if you were 42 weeks they'd keep you in until there was the space so they could regularly monitor you. When I was induced with DD they spent two days monitoring me on the maternity ward then took me over to delivery for my induction because I was classed as high risk.

Ellizardo · 21/03/2015 07:08

I went in on Monday night at 39 weeks due to big baby (gestational diabetes); pessary at 0445 tues, wait 24 hrs (it did nothing); 2 sets of hormone gels (after VE, they syringe it up you, not painful) at 6 hr intervals which got me contracting but not dilation; 3rd set on thurs still nothing; have been booked for 'induction failure ELCS' for the last 24 hrs and keep getting bumped for Emergencies. Needless tosay, next time I'm going straight for ELCS, not having left the hospital for 6 days ain't fun.
