Hospital bag/bags?

Only 22 weeks so a while off yet, just wondering when I need to think about my hospital bags. Thinking it will be easier to do one for me and baby.
I'm honestly exhausted already and the size of a whale. Meant to be packing for a week away and it's taken me 2 weeks to get everything out I need (soooo lazy) but tomorrow I'm going to iron it all and pack-go mon so can't really leave it any later.
Just wondering if I should start buying and packing as I buy them?

I'm nearly 22 weeks and just ordered stuff like Brest pads and maternity pads from boots as on offer. Way I see it no harm in being prepared! In between working full time and other commitments um also knackered so doing like that now bit by bit means will eventually get done!

That's what I'm thinking. I have just put an order in online at boots and ordered 2 nighties from mothercare (only £8 each instead of £18) so thinking I'll pack bit by bit x

I'm 31 weeks and just started putting mine together. Someone at work suggested packing baby's stuff separately to mine, which definitely sounds like a good idea.

It is so much stuff to pack though! I thought I'd have enough room in my gym holdall but I think I might have to go for a wheeled suitcase instead...

I found it easier to take in 3 bags when I had DS

One for me - big weekend bag with all my stuff in
One for baby- my baby changing bag with everything for after the birth.
One for DH - rucksack with his snacks /spare shirt/ pants, tooth brush, phone charger

That way it was easier to find anything when we needed it rather than rummaging as you just looked in the relevant bag for that person

I may be a little bonkers about organisation Smile

I'm 23w and not even thought about it! With dd1 I had 2 bags, one for Labour and birth and one for afterwards. Would have been fine if hubby hadn't have gone home with 2nd bag still in the car!

I was going to pack at about 32 weeks. I got laughed at in my prego yoga class when I mentioned that, they tought I was much stressing.

Well I am particular about things and even if I got admitted to hospital for some otger reason it would be hard to explain to my husband exactly what I need so I think it is good to put some things aside.

The problem I had with packing early was that there are many things on the list I am still using and dont want them to be packed away, such as my slippers, pjs etc

So I packed preliminary bag with some substitutes and will replace these as time nears.

I had three bags - one for labour (mostly snacks for DH), one for me for after and one for baby. We only took one in to start, DH got the others after DD arrived and took my labour bag home.

Not too soon to pack at all. Don't go mad on pads etc, I didn't need more than about 48 hours worth in the end.

avocadotoast · 18/03/2015 23:07

Zahrah, I think 32 weeks is sensible! That's why I'm doing it now; I think it'll ease my mind a little to know I have my bag packed in case anything happens too early.

Thanks all, Ill Prob pack and re-pack a few times over. I like the idea of packing seperately and hadn't even thought of snacks for dp Blush so that's a great idea.
I have done a list of things to take and it's not my first baby but in 6 years there's so many changes. We took 2 babygrows for dd, but I read in bounty you take 6! Think we'll need suitcases ha ha. Luckily I'm close to hosp so will be packing small and sending dp home if I'm in longer than expected. Thanks all

I read a great tip on here about you getting everything you need out and then DP/DH packing your bags especially the one for labour. The thinking is in the heat of the moment he'll know where he's put everything and can pass it to you a lot quicker.

I'm only 26 weeks but we've already decided that this is what we're doing as I really want to avoid this conversation:

Me: Pass me my lip balm
DH: Where is it?
Me: In the side pocket
Me: No, the other side pocket
Me: No, the small one, with the zip!
DH: They're all small with zips!
Me: Arrrgh! I just want my lip balm!!!

5YearsTime · 19/03/2015 07:33

Like wino Ive packed three small bags instead of one large bag. One for me, one for baby, one for DH. I packed everything in smaller bags inside with labels on them.

DH didn't pack the bags but once I packed the smaller bags he watched me put them in and is aware of what is in which.

However, we're planning a home birth so the bags are there as a precaution but also so the midwives and DH can find anything they need instead of having to rummage through drawers. Hence the labelling! The bag for DH will hopefully not be needed as he obviously knows where his on clothes are in the house, but if we do transfer to hospital it will probably mean a longer stay or an emergency some may need clothes and not have time to pack them.

Am 30 weeks and going to start packinf this week, general advice is to do it around 34 weeks but having being reminded that I am at risk of pre term labour I thought I should start... Bought a small wheeled suitcase last night for my stuff and will use another bag for the baby bits

fattymcfatfat · 19/03/2015 08:05

ive been told im not allowed to pack until after the 27th may! (im 22 weeks)
my friends think they are funny and keeping a big secret from me, they are not. they are throwing me a baby shower. (basically using me as an excuse to have a party as their mothers and grandmothers will be there aswell Hmm its lovely they are thinking of me but they could make it something I'm comfortable with, im not good around new people anyway never mind when im pregnant! and I cang say anything because im not meant to know!!)

Topsyloulou · 19/03/2015 08:08

We had 3 bags. Changing bag full of baby's bits, small wheeled suitcase with my stuff in & rucksack for DP with snacks, phone chargers, change of tshirt etc. we also had a bag in the car with extra pads, baby gros, my going home clothes etc in so Dp could just bring things in out of there if we stayed in longer. Ended up having emcs so the bag in the car was very useful as I was in 5 days

Artandco · 19/03/2015 08:30

I packed around 30weeks also, mainly because I just received delivery of all the stuff and seemed a good place to store.

I took x2 bags. 1 with everything in for myself and baby really, then my handbag with lip balm/ kindle/ money/ phone/ charger in etc. then I figured I could lock the small bag with valuables into bedside cupboard if needed.

I packed into a small holdall but used travel packing cubes/ organisers so all baby clothes in one, all mine in another, random stuff in another. Meant it was easier to not just rumage through whole bag as could just take small baby one out and open that when changing baby for example. I didn't take loads either. 3 changes of clothes for us both after the birth, and 2 for me during just in case. I wore soft dresses and leggings so could use dress as nighty if I had caesarian, or with leggings as pjs, and then same thing to wear home and felt more comfortable dressed walking around. In the end I only stayed one night both times, as both children born early evening. So wore labour top open with ds's on chest until morning, showered, wore one outfit and home by lunchtime.

If your close by I would just pack for a max 2 night, 3 day stay, and send your dh home with dirty stuff and get more if you need to be in longer
