What sort of hair dye can I use if TTC or in early stages of pregnancy? I'm dark with far too many grey ones now. Would only do it if it's super safe. Thanks!

Im pretty sure you can use anything that is ammonia free. Do you usually get it done at hairdressers or home kit?

If hairdresser they should be able to advise. I know people who have died their hair throughout regardless but you have to do what you feel happy with!

Good luck (assuming you're ttc)

I don't actually think there is any risk. irs a tiny amount that isn't absorbed into your blood stream. I got a Holland and Barratt vegetable dye. I couldn't understand any of the ingredients so not sure what to look out for. my friend (she does bio chemistry or something or other ) said you don't need to worry about ammonia.

I think that the evidence is that there is no risk (check out NHS website). I think the bigger concern is that you can become allergic to substances in pregnancy that you were previously fine with so you must do a patch test. I've avoided dying my hair for this reason(I'm allergic to a lot) not because of the chemicals.

I dyed my hair throughout my first pregnancy and have dyed it once already during this one. My hair grows so fast when I'm pregnant there is no way I could put up with not doing it!

My mw and hairdresser mum said the advice to not do it is outdated. My mw suggested that the advice was originally put in place when hair dyes caused more damage to your hair, so combined with pregnancy hormones it could cause breakage to your hair and dodgy results, rather than any damage to your baby.

You can use any hair dye you like in pregnancy. The only reason to be careful is because your skin may be a little more sensitive, so make sure t patch test. Otherwise, you're fine.

That nhs page, as usual, is badly written. It tells you there is no risk and then tells you how to be careful and suggests that there is in fact a small risk.
There is not.

Hair dye is absolutely safe in pregnancy. Try to keep it off your scalp as much as possible though because your skin might be more sensitive.

One thing to bear in mind - your hair does change during pregnancy. I've noticed mine becoming a lot less porous (from about eight weeks!). When I did my roots with my normal hair dye a few weeks ago, they didn't go as light as the rest of my hair. Don't know if that will be such a problem with dark hair though.

mumhum · 18/03/2015 15:49

As others have said, I would do a skin patch test as your skin can be more sensitive in pregnancy. Dab a bit behind your ear and leave it for 24hrs, if no redness then you are good to go.
