Diagnosed with high red blood cell count

I am 18 weeks pregnant and have just been diagnosed with a high count of red blood cells, the doctor says I will need weekly monitoring, I am really worried that this will have a negative affect on the baby. Has anyone else been diagnosed with this and is it something to worry about? I am very concerned as it's my first pregnancy. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Did they give you any more information than that? Are they doing further tests? It's one of those things that can be caused by a number of factors - it can be genetic or a symptom of several things.

Only your doctor can give you real advice, but I suggest you take some times to think of what you want to know and write those questions down. Take them with you for your next visit.

You might want to ask:

What is the root cause (genetic? Etc)
What kind of polycythemia is it? (Get a label!)
Can you rule out any other problems? Short or long term.
What does it mean for me?
How will it affect my pregnancy?
How will it affect my newborn?
What should I do/ not do day to day? ( activities, foods, lifestyle etc.)
Is there any more information and support out there?

It's very easy to get upset at medical appointments and leave still feeling confused. Taking pen, paper and questions helps you and your doctor get the most out of your appointment. Good luck!
