Did you choose to have a second c-section?

I had an emergency C-section with my first baby. For those of you who ihad a c-section too...If you had a second baby, did you opt to have another C-section or give birth 'the natural way'? If you had a C-section again, did you regret it?

I got it booked at my 20 week appointment, but came armed with a heavily annotate copy of the rcog guidelines so the consultant could see I've thought it through

DC1 EMCS

DC2 - planned for VBAC, but changed to ELCS due to pre-eclampsia
So glad I did, it was amazing.

DC3 - due July, no option, ELCS only under a GA. Still prefer that to a VBAC for safety reasons.

I had dd by emergency c section after a very long labour where she ended up distressed. I opted for an elective c section with ds and it was definitely the best decision for me. It meant I knew exactly when I would be going in hospital so could plan better. Recovery from the elective was so much easier than the emergency. due dc3 in 9 weeks and will be again booked in for an elective.

RhiannonElward · 17/03/2015 10:43

I had an emcs first for DS after failing to progress when induced for pre-eclampsia. Next came an elcs for complete previa with DD.

This time I'm very much hoping to experience a natural birth so I'm going for a vbac, partly because I want to try it naturally and partly because I want to be home and well, back with my family as soon as possible. I may regret that when I'm screaming in agony but I'm happy to take the chance :)

For those on CS 2 or 3 - were any of you allowed a 24 hour release?

I'm all prepared to beg my consultant if need be Grin

I had EMCS last time. Was planning on VBAC this time but complications have risen including placenta previa which is also covering cervix and told very unlikely to move. ELCS definately the safest option so I am happy with it now, and prob somewhat releived.

Anyone know anything about natural c-section - started hearing people talk of it

Number3cometome · 17/03/2015 11:37

Basically it is when the make the incision but the baby is pushed out via contractions out of the incision.

Personally I think C-sections should be done quickly and without fuss, so that's not something I would consider.

My first was an EMCS- severe foetal distress at 38 weeks with little warning- I went in for induction after my waters went and was immediately whipped into surgery.

I did consider a VBAC, we had an excellent VBAC clinic where a specialist m/w talked me through my birth notes, covered risks, benefits, and the chances of the same things happening again in a second birth. Then I was left to come to my own decision. I highly recommend finding out if your hospital have a VBAC clinic, even if you plan a CS.

For psychological reasons I went for a ELCS, as I couldn't cope with the same thing happening and not knowing this time until too late. I found the ELCS much harder, it was slower, and they took their time. The spinal was awful- it all happened so fast the first time I barely noticed until the baby was out and in resus.

Number 3, I was allowed out on day 2 after I'd had the last of the heparin injections.

I had a 40 hour labour with DS and an ELCS with DD. I bloody loved it and have no regrets at all.

Grantaire · 17/03/2015 11:45

I had an emcs and tried for a vbac. Had another 3 day labour and emcs. No regrets, it was never in my cintrol.

CS recoveries were easy, no painkillers and a 12hr discharge with one of them, 36hrs with the other.

Grantaire · 17/03/2015 11:46

AuntyBrenda · 17/03/2015 11:51

Elective c section with DC1 due to beino breach and not growing due to where the cord was. Vbac with DC2 and I am praying for a Vbac with DC3 as I coped with the pains of labour far easier than the pains after the section.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 17/03/2015 11:54

I had two ELCS. Well, I'd have gone natural (albeit reluctantly) with DS1 but I had issues which meant I never went into labour. After they tried inducing me (at 42 weeks!) for 2 days, unsuccessfully, I finally had the CS I'd secretly been praying for. (Really praying, in churches.)

With DS2, they offered me a ELCS and I bit their hands off. :) I loved both my CSes - calm, controlled, quick and recovery was fine both times.

PassTheAnswers · 17/03/2015 12:01

#1 emcs after v long labour and failed forceps and other issues, ended up under GA. Lots of psychological damage, lack of bonding and bad pnd plus inability to bf.
#2 elcs albeit brought forward due to concerns over baby. Really positive experience, healed a lot of the scars. Easy recovery in comparison to emcs, bf and v strong bond with dc2. Would have been a quick release from hospital had it not been for the low birthweight issue which meant an extended stay.

muddylettuce · 17/03/2015 15:29

I had an emcs and have opted for vbac this time with conditions...I don't want to be induced so have asked for cs if I go overdue. I was very ill after my last section, apparently the complications I suffered last time are very rare but I would still rather avoid a prolonged stay in hospital this time. Fingers crossed! X

BirdInTheRoom · 17/03/2015 16:23

Number3 - I will be on CS 3 and they actively want me on the enhanced recovery programme where they get you out after 24 hours!! You should ask about it - it's something they seem to be pushing for now in the NHS - presumably to free up beds.

I actually want to stay in another night due to how shit I felt after my previous sections, and problems feeding etc!!

Number3cometome · 17/03/2015 16:44

It will depend on how I feel, but previously, I just wanted to get home and relax (and pooh in my own toilet) Grin

SuburbanRhonda · 17/03/2015 22:51

I went home after 36 hours but that was 16 years ago.

anothernumberone · 17/03/2015 22:56

EmCS dd1, VBAC dd2. I pushed for and preferred the VBAC as the recovery was very easy comparatively even though I had a very straight forward section experience. I had dc3 normally too.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 17/03/2015 23:07

I had EMCS (prem baby delivered early cause I was ill rather than labour gone wrong IYSWIM) first time round and VBAC second time. I was very nervous of going for VBAC especially as I was induced, I so nearly asked for another section. But in the end I did it myself and I was so glad I got to experience a vaginal birth. Saying that I was very lucky, labour was short (4 hrs) and contractions weren't that bad except for maybe 10minutes during transition phase. Pushed for 20 mins and baby was out. If you could guarantee that kind of labour I'd do it all again!! But it's the uncertainty that's scary and no one can tell you what's the right decision I'm afraid.
