I don't have many bad habits, but diet pepsi is my guilty pleasure. However. I'm finally pregnant after a rocky 18 months and over thinking everything in terms of keeping ba y safe.

I want a can of pepsi on a Saturday night but I'm too scared. Even in my hormonal state I can see this might sound nuts.. but I'd appreciate some reassurance.

of course it is fine, just watch your overall caffeine consumption. I only ever drink diet drinks and have 2 perfectly healthy children. What is it that worries you about diet soft drinks?

scarednoob · 16/03/2015 10:03

i'm a total diet coke fiend, but have tried to cut down a lot since the BFP. i try to limit it to 2-3 cans a week, rather than 2 or so per day. it's not so much the caffeine as the fact that it's just not as good as water, milk, juice etc.

the mw was a bit disapproving even of this, and said, "we don't recommend any fizzy drinks." but as far as i can see, i can't drink, i can't sleep without peeing, i can't eat delicious things like goats cheese on crackers.... i need SOME treat!!

chasingtherainbow · 16/03/2015 10:03

I think the negative connotations associated with coke in general, and the aspartmine etc with diet varieties?

sorry, i meant, for me it's not as much about the caffeine, as i never drink tea or coffee, so 1 can of diet coke isn't too much.

but if you drink tea and coffee as well, the caffeine is something to watch carefully, i THINK 200mg a day is the max recommended, but check the nhs website!

ShanVanVocht · 16/03/2015 10:07

This is the second post today about sweeteners. It's fine. They have been extensively researched and are safe to consume during pregnancy. Like anything, pregnant or not, moderation is they key. Probably a six pack a day is ill advised, otherwise, knock yourself out.

dementedpixie · 16/03/2015 10:11

aspartame has not been shown to have any harmful effects and there is a lot of scaremongering about it. There have been numerous studies that show it is not dangerous

chasingtherainbow · 16/03/2015 10:12

Nope don't drink tea or coffee. Squash or water only. Ok ill stop worrying.

Please don't deny yourself a can of diet pepsi if you want one. Diet drinks are absolutely fine to drink in pregnancy.

dobedobedo · 16/03/2015 11:07

I never liked fizzy drinks until I was pregnant, and then I craved them like mad. Ds is nearly one and seems fine Grin

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 16/03/2015 12:20

It is fine.

I am not a massive one for artificial sweetners. I don't think it's great to train the palate to eat masses of sweet foods. For similar reasons, I'm not keen on low fat.

But that isn't a reason to deny yourself a diet coke. Just enjoy!

MissTwister · 16/03/2015 13:29

What else does one drink in the pub apart from Diet Coke!

crazycatlady82 · 16/03/2015 14:25

Ginger beer and lime Smile

ToddlingAlong1 · 16/03/2015 20:14

These threads re aspartame have made me worried. I hate full sugar drinks, as do not have a sweet tooth so have always drunk low sugar / diet drinks. Not keen on our water so drink it mostly with squash. Didn't even think about it tbh. Have been going through a litre bottle undiluted Robinsons juice in 10 days. Will obviously stop / drastically reduce it, but got me concerned now, am 27 weeks pregnant. Are there any low sugar squashes that don't contain aspartame?

dementedpixie · 16/03/2015 20:25

There is no issue with it though so why are you worrying?

ShanVanVocht · 16/03/2015 20:31

No need to be concerned by other people fretting over nothing.

scarednoob · 16/03/2015 22:07

If you wanted to try more natural drinks, you could make your own "squash" with water/sparkling water and fruit juice? Or maybe holland and Barrett would have something?

S2b16 · 18/03/2015 21:46

I'm 22 weeks and have lived off full fat coke. (Ive read loads of posts on here that many people crave full fat coke so I'm not alone) Baby is healthy and it's only now my sickness has stopped that I'm trying to cut down. I'm worried more about my teeth to be honest. So by having diet your already better than me Smile pregnancy, although amazing, has so many dos and donts, I wouldn't deprive yourself the odd can I really wouldn't xx

MaraThonbar · 18/03/2015 22:13

Aspartame has been tested over and over again and shown to be safe. Just make sure to count it as part of your daily caffeine consumption. Caffeine-free diet Coke is a crime against humanity.

dietcokeisgreat · 19/03/2015 06:34

Note my username!!!

27wks here with ds2. Addicted to diet coke (with caffeine). Have not reduced consumpion this pregnancy or last, although swaped to decaff tea. I am only a very very occasional coffee drinker. As long as you stay wthin the recommended caffeine intake in pregnancy (200mg nhs suggests, 40mg in can of coke) i would relax. Pregnancy is a long haul, you could avoid everything and be miserable for 10mo, or not!

Topsyloulou · 19/03/2015 08:09

I had a can of diet coke / Pepsi once a day. That was my only caffeine for the day as I switched to decaf coffee & always drink decaf tea.

Kym134 · 19/03/2015 15:48

The only things to worry about are caffeine intake and that you will need more calcium (if not in your pregnancy supplements) as coke can reduce calcium absorption and sometimes love calcium in bones (usually at high consumption levels) so just have more calcium.

weelamb123 · 19/03/2015 15:52

Me too, ive been living on full fat fizzy everything tbh. Cant stomach the thought of flat juice. Xx

Carrierpenguin · 19/03/2015 15:55

Try the sainsbury own brand diet cola and other fizzy drinks/squashes. Sainsbury use no aspartame in their own brand products, I love their cherryade and drink guilt free for this reason Grin
