Placing my Boots/Mothercare order! Anything I've forgotten?

I am placing an order for all sorts of disposables/medicines I am anticipating it might be handy to have post-birth. I don't want to be having to pop out to get stuff, or sending DH and hoping he gets the right stuff, so trying to think what I might need now. I realise there will inevitably be things that I didn't consider I'd need, and we will need to pop out and get stuff anyway. The fact it's impossible to plan for absolutely all occurrences really irks me Hmm

Anyway! I have done a price comparison between Boots and Mothercare to try and save as much money as poss, but haven't thought about other shops, so if there are any recommendations let me know!

Having read hundreds of lists online, this is what I think I need:

Maternity towels x48
Breast pads x40
cotton wool pads
Lansinoh
Infacol
nappy sacks
newborn nappies x26 (will be trying cloth from maybe 2 or 3 months old)
(wipe-wise, will use water and cotton wool first of all, then reusable maybe, but already have 3 packs of disposable.)

changing mat
baby towels
flannels
muslins

thrush medicine (will need)
strepsils
paracetemol
fybogel (will need)
lactulose (will need)
pile cream
witch hazel cream
hot&cold boob compress things
metanium

BB cream
concealer
carmex lip balm
moisturiser
eye mask
earplugs (in the hopes DH can look after baby for a couple of house at some point!)
hand santiser

Will go to Primark and get:
big black pants
lots of long strap tops
thin cotton dressing gown
new PJs
Post-partum clothes, whole other story.

Also look at using ocado for all food shopping. Good delivery, and yearly pass saves delivery fees each time. They often do 'baby events' where everything is 1/2 price.

If your looking to save money though I wouldn't worry about buying stuff just incase too much. Ie infacol, we never used with x2 babies, and I can't say I remember friends using either, so I would wait and see if baby is actually colicky first. All these items at £3-5 can save you a fair amount if your not buying several items just in case.

Never needed nappy cream either!

Also look at everything you already own to see if you can use that a) saves money b) saves space.

If you do decide on a manual breast pump the avent manual is good, very comfy and I have tried a couple of different manual as I have been expressing for the last 9 weeks until dd2 could latch properly. Make sure you shop around though - I paid £36 in boots and then found it for £18 on Amazon but needed straight away as I broke the connector on my electric being clumsy!

I found Sainsbury own brand breast pads great, got through loads initially but they are cheap, same with maternity pads.

Good luck!

Hand cream - they may really dry out with all the hand washing.

Not from boots or Mothercare, but a box set of something you want to watch, and loads of healthyish snacks which are easy to prepare and eat with one hand. And loads of biscuits /crisps if you like.

Possibly more breast pads. Thats 20 pairs, and you might be changing several times a day.

You got blankets etc for sleeping babies?

Rosieliveson · 15/03/2015 18:07

Some tea tree oil for baths afterwards if you have stitches. Maybe some haemorrhoids cream. I suffered with this post partum Blush

Agree with pottering about the moist tissue paper! Also, Asda little angel breast pads are really soft and gentle and definitely get some Lansinoh lanolin - expensive but you really don't need much at all and it really soothes (and doesn't need washing off before each feed).

I also had arnica tablets to take after the birth. Helps with the healing. Good luck sounds like you have it pretty much covered !

Retromama008 · 15/03/2015 18:51

Materbity pads are a must as they are thick so they make sitting more comfortable I was changing mine very regularly to keep stitches clean I had 48 in pre birth but got more after another two packs had some left over once bleeding stopped but they came in handy for first period as it was very heavy(been told it's common)

Retromama008 · 15/03/2015 18:54

I also tried all nappy brand and found tesco loves baby to be the best so once I used up all the pampers someone got me as I gift I started using those, they are really soft and no leaks, so keep receipts for everything incase baby is allergic to certain brand and you need to exchange them x

DorothyBastard · 15/03/2015 18:57

I put a few drops of lavender oil in my bath to soothe my stitches at my midwife's suggestion. I'd also recommend having a plastic jug that you can fill with warm water and pour between your legs while you wee, to stop it stinging.

Retromama008 · 15/03/2015 18:57

Sorry again lol the boob compress things are useless I had the lansinoh ones and they brust both of them ! Use a face cloth instead wet them stick in the freezer of heat it up with warm water

CommanderShepard · 15/03/2015 19:11

Breast pads: I found the absorbent ones shite as the milk just rolled straight down them and into my underboob crease. Nice. After much trial I found the Mothercare comfort fit best: they don't open up all the way so they create more of a cup sort of shape and don't leak as much.

Waterwipes are brilliant and much thicker than other wipes so actually clean up poo rather than spreading it around.

SantasFavouriteHo · 15/03/2015 23:00

Yes, definitely get something to pour over self whilst peeing those first few days, possibly longer if you have stitches
I used a sports bottle top bottle of water, a big one and filled it with warm water and a few drops of tea tree every time i went to the loo, takes the sting away and aids healing/fights infection
The sports nozzle was easier to direct I found too than a jug which in my post baby haze I mostly poured on the floor!

Marking my place on here as there's some really good ideas.

In terms of knickers, Primark do some full briefs (the kind that come rolled up, 4 for £3 I think) that are pretty good. DH and I had a good giggle when I first bought them because they are enormous but I think just before and just after having baby they'll be a godsend. I bought two sizes up from normal I think.

I also bought a nightie from Primark for about £6, I'm going to go back for another one. It's black with a sort of lace effect round the neck. Obviously it may fit you differently but on me I've found that it's really stretchy, thin and comfortable, and the neck sits low enough that I'd be able to pull it down for breastfeeding.

BreeVDKamp · 16/03/2015 17:59

Fab thanks for all the advice!!!
