Yes you can

The thing with shellfish is that it may cause food poisoning which can make you poorly (and if severe can cause dehydration which can be worrying if you're pregnant)

I would eat it without hesitation

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 15/03/2015 11:21

Where have you got your banned list from? The official NHS list is not nearly as restrictive as that. Prawns are fine, scallops too.

GooodMythicalMorning · 15/03/2015 11:23

Yes. Should be fine

Chchchchanging · 15/03/2015 11:25

So this is my second pregnancy and during my first nothing was an issue I was clear and made my own choices
Moved house and differed area / 5 years later and the mw totally confused me; nhs say this but we recommend this for loads of stuff I was fine with like fish, feta, mozerella etc
When I said I wast drinking atm 1st trimester but may indulge occasionally later on I had a Shock face
I reiterated like one glass of fizz per wedding, we have 2, and she was still v judgy even though GP who I had to book in with said moderation was prob ok though recommendations are changing all the time
Thanks all- the common sense mother approach needed!!

I would. I ate pretty much everything as normal through both of my pg.

BikeRunSki · 15/03/2015 11:28

Prawn/crayfish sandwhiches made up a large part for my diet in both pg, with no problems.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 15/03/2015 11:33

Cooked shellfish is not on the list if things to avoid.

EffinIneffable · 15/03/2015 11:34

Fish and shellfish is absolutely fine as long as it's cooked properly as per nhs guidelines.

Inpup · 15/03/2015 11:49

You'll be fine, I eat everything I normally would just cut down to the occasional glass of wine.
If she's so judgy avoid mentioning what you are eating.

MissTwister · 15/03/2015 12:40

What was her problem with fish, feta and mozzarella?

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 15/03/2015 13:00

Your mw is making it up. Next time ask her the basis for her recommendations.

Prawns and scallops, eaten hot as you are, are fine. (Eaten cold they are fine too. But, like most foods, I was cautious about cooked and cooled prawns unless I knew they'd been stored properly. ie. I avoided buffet prawns!)

ShanVanVocht · 15/03/2015 13:13

You can eat them hot. Or cold. Or raw if you like, if you know where they come from and how they have been kept.

People believe an awful lot of rubbish about pregnancy "rules". Most of them are either made up or so over-cautious as to be insulting.

dementedpixie · 15/03/2015 13:19

cook shellfish is fine

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx#close - the foods to avoid/that are safe are listed here

ShanVanVocht · 15/03/2015 13:29

The NHS advice is so badly written: don't eat certain cheeses/pates/etc because of listeria.....except the biggest recent outbreaks of listeria have been from melons, and beansprouts, sausages and butter which no-one advises you against, and commercially available ice cream, which that page tells you is perfectly safe!

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 15/03/2015 13:55

Which is why I also ate cheeses. Grin I felt avoiding it made a statistically negligible difference to my listeria risk.

I did avoid most buffets and certain take aways though. Food hygiene and storage is the biggest issue.
