First Pregnancy - night peeing!

Hi everyone,

I went to bed at midnight last night...it's just past 4am and I'm wide awake because I've been up 3 times to urinate! I do have to go pretty frequently through the day but it's diabolical at night. I know nothing is 'normal' in pregnancy for everyone, but is this really weird?! Plus any advise on easing it would be great...I work 12 hour shifts and if this keeps up I'll be off sick the whole pregnancy with exhaustion!

Thanks Smile
Xx

Completely normal I'm afraid! Nature's way of training you for 6 or 7 night feeds per night maybe. I never found a way round it - you have to keep drinking after all.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

How far along are you? I found it was bad for the first few weeks and then got better (but not like normal) till it ramped up again in the 3rd trimester.

If it helps I got more sleep with a newborn than when pregnant. Now I wake up every time I turn over and when it gets to this sort of time I am often awake for an hour and sometimes don't go back to sleep. I am 35 weeks.

Mine tailed off 12 till about 17 then started up again...sorry but I think it only gets worse!

I'm 18+2 and peeing round the clock!!

Up first pregnancy for me too...and im up every 3-4 hours to pee in the night, and cant really not drink water as i feel so thirsty/have a history of bouts of cystitus so want to prevent that too, very annoying when my shift at work starts at 6am!!

applecore0317 · 15/03/2015 08:46

Mine continued until I was around 17 weeks and then after that it was only once in the night. Now 29+4 and its started increasing to 3 times a night.

In early pregnancy as your uterus grows it will press against your bladder plus your kidneys are working a lot harder and then in the second trimester as it comes up out of the pelvis it eases off. So its perfectly normal. I try to drink less in the hour or so before bed.

It's a lovely vicious circle: wake up for a wee, realise your mouth is really dry, drink water.... Wake up for a wee...! X

I've got a preexisting bladder problem so I've probably had it worse than most, but I was up every hour to pee between about 8 and 15 weeks. It slowed down to maybe 3 or 4 times a night at that point which is close to normal for me with my bladder condition, but I think it is getting worse again now at 19 weeks.
Afraid it's totally normal to need to get up to pee! I can st least say that since around 15 weeks, I haven't had the crushing all day exhaustion to go with it...

CBo79 · 15/03/2015 09:42

Yup, same here! The other night I had to go 5 times...could have cried. Was tempted to take my duvet into the bathroom and just skip there! I was going a lot in my first trimester, eased up slightly but got bad again around week 22, and is getting worse the bigger the baby gets. And I have the raging thirst too...

CBo79 · 15/03/2015 09:42

Kip, even!

pinkie1982 · 15/03/2015 22:12

Lol I'm usually up 4-5 times a night normally so I'm up even more now at 23 weeks! Yes I'm exhausted and on a countdown to mat leave!

plonkie · 16/03/2015 08:14

I got up 3 times for a wee last night and that's a really good night! Im 11 weeks and it's been 5 or 6 times a night, ugh. It's so exhausting isn't it! Doesn't seem to make any difference if I have a drink before bed or not either. Bah!

willnotbetamed · 16/03/2015 08:18

I'm on my third pregnancy. First 14 weeks or so were awful, was up at least twice a night and often more. Now (20 weeks) it is calming down and some nights I even make it through until 5:30am, which is brilliant. I know it will get worse again towards the end though, especially when you add the stress of manoeuvering yourself into an upright position, hauling yourself out of bed, and then trying to negotiate self & bump through the dark hallway without crashing into things en route. Going to bed early is the only thing that helps - I am quite often well gone by 9pm...
