Whooping cough vaccine

Who's having it or has had it? Is anyone not having it?

This wasn't around when I had ds and I'm wary of anything new. Although I'm aware it's a vaccination which has been used for years just not on pregnant women.

Has anyone had or not had any side effects?

Got mine tomorrow! Was surprised they offered a Saturday appointment as I didn't realise that surgeries opened at the weekend

trilbydoll · 13/03/2015 20:39

I had it last time, and had it again today for dc2. My arm aches! Last time my arm was red and achy for a few days, which I wasn't expecting.

I thought it was the same vaccine they give 8w babies? If an 8w baby can handle it, I'm sure I can, I'm about 100x the size.

Worth it for the protection in the first 8w, esp with DD at nursery. Whooping cough is horrible and newborns are so tiny, it wouldn't be a fair fight.

anythingbutinsomnia · 13/03/2015 20:42

I had mine during the week. Only side effect was slight numb fingers for a few hours afterwards. Midwife said they're not 100% sure it does help, but whooping cough is so nasty for newborns that it was worth trying.

TeaandHobnobs · 13/03/2015 20:53

I had mine about 8 weeks ago. Zero side effects, bar a slightly achey arm for an hour or two afterwards. The flu jab had worse side effects for me (but was still fine - I'd rather have a sore arm for a couple of days than the flu!)

adognamedboo · 13/03/2015 20:57

I had it, it is the 4in1 vaccine they give 8week olds, whooping cough polio diphtheria tetanus as it's not available singly. Got a very sore arm from the tetanus part but that's to be expected.

Whooping cough is deadly and has killed several new babies in my area so I think it's worth the pain.

TheJiminyConjecture · 13/03/2015 21:01

I had mine yesterday, didn't hurt initially (not like the bastard anti d) but I've got a really achy arm now. I think I read on here it is the same as the preschool 4 in 1 vaccination. Whooping cough is awful and can be deadly in newborns so it's worth it in my opinion.

applecore0317 · 13/03/2015 23:54

It protects the baby until they have their own jabs at 8 weeks. There has been outbreaks of whooping cough in recent years which is why it is now given to pregnant women

seaoflove · 13/03/2015 23:58

Had mine on Monday. Yes, it makes your arm pretty sore but that's it. It was comforting to know it wasn't a "new" vaccine, but rather an existing vaccine given to a different age group.

catsofa · 14/03/2015 00:38

I had it and I'm terrified of needles. But well worth it to protect a tiny baby from those horrible diseases! My arm was a bit sore later on but obviously that's nothing in comparison to the massive damage that those illnesses can do to babies - go for it!

SmileyScooby · 14/03/2015 07:47

I had it a few days ago, only side effect for me has been slight soreness at injection site but only if put pressure on it. I decided to have it as a friends son had it last year (he's 10) and was horrible seeing him suffer with it couldn't bear to think of my little man getting it.

Gunpowder · 14/03/2015 07:56

I had it, had very sore arm for about three days so think about whether you want it in right or left arm (I chose left and couldn't sleep left sided for a couple of days!) Actual jab was fine.

There was an epidemic here last year/year before? And the local hosp lost some newborns to whooping cough. Sad Swung it for me.

TwentyFifteen2015 · 14/03/2015 07:57

Had it with both mine. It was introduced when I was about 30 weeks with my first and I was wary as was part of the first wave of pregnant women getting it. Was advised by a doctor friend to get it as he'd seen the horrible sight of babies which whooping cough.

No side effects at all. Second time round I had it at the same time as my flu jab. Both happy and healthy children.

Allstoppedup · 14/03/2015 08:02

I had mine with DS1, he's 15 months now. No side effects apart from a slightly achy arm for an evening but really nothing terrible.

I'm pregnant again now and I'm not sure if I need another so soon or if I'm still covered by the first but I'd definitely have it again. My best friend has just had Whooping cough and she was really poorly with it!

sianihedgehog · 14/03/2015 08:02

I'll absolutely be having it. The risks are really low, and the risks to a young baby of catching whooping cough are really high. No brainer, really, unless you have a very poor understanding of statistics.

Schoolaroundthecorner · 14/03/2015 08:05

I had it on Monday, arm is a bit sore but I still have a lump at the injection site that hasn't gone away yet which is mildly annoying. Aside from that it was fine.

Had it.

Got whooping cough anyway (think I was developing it when I had the jab). It was utterly grim.

Definitely have the jab!

D0nnaO · 14/03/2015 10:54

Had it this morning, was literally in & out in less than 2 minutes. arm is a bit achy like I can tell I've had an injection but it's not hurting or anything Smile
