This is my wife's 12 week scan picture and I welcome all predictions on the gender using the nub theory :-)

Lol webbswonder I think you will find you are wrong

MorgansMummy24 · 23/03/2015 19:06

Gender refers to the mascunity or femininity of a human being not there sexual organs

You should really have cropped your wife's name out of this picture - suggest reporting your own thread and asking them to delete

webbswonder · 23/03/2015 19:10

I'm really not going to be drawn into a debate over it, please read the links I posted and maybe get out the dictionary and look it up, this is not what I started this post for so I'm gonna say goodbye to you on this.

Copied and pasted from a dictionary website that I have supplied the link for ^

Usage Note: Some people maintain that the word sex should be reserved for reference to the biological aspects of being male or female or to sexual activity, and that the word gender should be used only to refer to sociocultural roles. Accordingly, one would say The effectiveness of the treatment appears to depend on the sex of the patient and In society, gender roles are clearly defined. In some situations this distinction avoids ambiguity, as in gender research, which is clear in a way that sex research is not. The distinction can be problematic, however. Linguistically, there isn't any real difference between gender bias and sex bias, and it may seem contrived to insist that sex is incorrect in this instance.

Morgansmummy and BetweenDogandWolf : jeez you two are rude. Do you correct all OPs so aggressively?

You have totally and unnecessarily derailed a happy thread. Hmm

BetweenDogandWolf · 23/03/2015 19:18

Sorry webbswonder , I didn't start the other thread to have a go at you personally. It really was meant as a more general thing.

Congratulations on your wife's pregnancy.

MorgansMummy24 · 23/03/2015 19:24

GetrudeBell Im not being rude I'm being honest and in all honesty I really don't care how my opinion is perceived I'm just stating facts

You were pissing on someone's chips. Rudely.

MorgansMummy24 · 23/03/2015 19:27

Clearly not. Gender and sex are not the same things, I'm not sugar coating it, it's as simple as that!

webbswonder · 23/03/2015 19:39

Well in that case there are a hell of a lot of people on here that are using the word gender in discussions about a baby's sex. I've also supplied two links to two English dictionary websites that both clearly state that gender means sex, I agree that it could also refer to what your talking about but I think you'll find that the official meaning is sex (I.E male or female) I don't want to see people getting into an argument about this so let that be the end of it.

Well in that case there are a hell of a lot of people on here that are WRONGLY using the word gender in discussions about a baby's sex, they can't all be wrong, I've also supplied two links for two English dictionary websites that both clearly state that gender means sex, I agree that it could also refer to what your talking about but I think you'll find that the official meaning is sex (I.E male or female) I don't want to see people getting into an argument about this so let that be the end of it.

Won't somebody tell me what nub theory is?!

Gender predictions using the nub theory.
Grantaire · 24/03/2015 11:26

OP, if you have done lots of research into nub theory, then what do you think the picture shows? I can't see the nub in either picture actually and think you might be erroneously looking at the pelvis. Have you tried using a forum like ingender which likes to discuss nub theory in great, great detail? Grin Most people on MN are unfamiliar with or uninterested in nub theory.

ThursdayLast, you can google for extensive information but the theory is based upon the notion that developing babies have a nub in the genital area which appears different dependent upon the sex of the baby. The angle and shape are different.

webbswonder, I can link you to something that confirms literally means 'figuratively'. This doesn't make it correct usage. It is just common usage, which is a different thing entirely. I agree completely that it doesn't matter on this thread, everybody knew what you were asking and sometimes the manner of bringing up the distinction on these sorts of threads is jarring and inappropriate. The confusion between the words is ingrained. Thankfully, it doesn't affect meaning in most cases- particularly not on these sorts of threads - but in the real world, there's quite an important discussion to be had around the way people incorrectly swap the two words. Sex is a physical thing, gender a construct.

Congratulations on your wife's pregnancy. I hope it's a happy and healthy one.

pinkie87 · 24/03/2015 16:38

webbswonder This is taken directly from that link...

"Although the words gender and sex both have the sense ‘the state of being male or female’, they are typically used in slightly different ways: sex tends to refer to biological differences, while gender refers to cultural or social ones."

So although the whole gender/sex thing on MN irritates me greatly, I think you're actually wrong in this case.
