Developing random food intolerances

Has anyone else suddenly developed an intolerance to certain things since being pregnant? I was fortunate enough to have no morning sickness, etc. in the first trimester, but now I'm coming up to 19 weeks I think I've developed a sudden, violent intolerance to milk. Not cheese or yoghurt or any other dairy, just milk. I had a latte on Tuesday morning followed by a bowl of cereal and milk, and I had to take the rest of the day and Wednesday off as I had crippling cramps, nausea and diarrhoea! Blush

This morning (not yet convinced that it is the milk) I had a small cappuccino which I thought would be OK because it's not as milky as a latte, and within about 30 mins of drinking it, I was on the loo again! Horrendous! Whereas yesterday morning- because I was still feeling a little...delicate- I had a black coffee and was fiiiiiine.

Can this happen? Is this another marvellous, magical pregnancy 'thing'...?
It's OK, I can live with it. As long as it doesn't take my cheese from me. ANYTHING BUT MY CHEESE.

Yes it can, with all my pregnancies (am on no4) I can't eat red meat, it makes me violently ill, just as you describe. With baby no1 I was also violently ill with chocolate, thank The Lord that hasn't happened again!

Skeppers · 13/03/2015 11:47

Oh God, cathpip...I think that not being able to eat red meat would freak me out waaaaaaaaay more than chocolate! No steak? Burgers? Unimaginable. Shock

Had horrendous morning sickness, now realise some was caused by what I ate....cant have rice or cheese.

Skeppers · 13/03/2015 12:23

Rice, hestialou? How random! It seems so inoffensive.

Yup, pregnancy can do weird things to your allergies or tolerance of things. I developed an intolerance to garlic and raw onions during pregnancy and became intolerant to red wine following pregnancy. But on the upside my terrible Hayfield vanished completely and has never returned!

I am GUTTED.

I was only just taking the p*ss out of my little sister last week for having just been diagnosed with wheat/gluten and dairy intolerance. I guess this is Karma kicking me up the arse!?

Bananas Hmm I had the same experience you described-crippling cramp, pain and nausea. I still can't eat them Confused

I just hope to f*ck that everything goes back to normal afterwards! The worst thing is that one of my pregnancy cravings has been for breakfast cereal...mmm...shredded wheat with sugar and warm milk....NO MORE! Shock

I'm having a similar problem with milk and it's driving me batty. I can eat cheese and yoghurt but can't even drink tea at the moment without feeling sick/getting tummy ache and ending up with a throat full of gunk. It's very bizarre!

I also want to eat cereal all the time but the milk thing is putting me off.

missybct · 13/03/2015 16:20

I'm 6 weeks with no food intolerances to report, but by god, I have wind Hmm

Snowflake27 · 13/03/2015 17:48

I have The milk thing too! It's awful - I've taken eating my cerial dry which thankfully I've never minded doing, otherwise I think I'd have starved in the first trimester. I too can eat cheese and yogurt so I'm hoping im getting my calcium this way!!

Same thing with milk here too. I've swapped to alpro almond milk. After extensive taste testing of lots of varieties of soya, rice, oaty milk substitutes I found the best two were the UHT (Yeh really, the fresh ones tend to be sweeter and try too hard) Tesco sweetened soya milk (it's sweetened with a touch of Apple juice - the non sweetened one is proper yuk. Tastes like what you'd image the water from a used white paintbrush would be like) and the UHT alpro almond milk. Delicious on Shreddies. I'm not a tea or coffee drinker but I fear these milk alternatives do funny things to them like curdle. Not what you want to see when feeling a bit delicate.

I haven't been able to stomach anything caffeine related since about 6wks. It was the first thing that made me think something was going on, as I LOVE my coffee, and am a big Pepsi drinker normally... Now 23+4 and still can't do any of coffee, coke/Pepsi, chocolate which is quite upsetting being that its almost easter! Sad plus I had just bought over 200 pods for my coffee machine just before finding out I was pg and they run out shortly after my due date! So fx I get that back asap after birth so can make the most of them during night feeds! Grin

My MiL completely went off meat when she was pg with DH, so much so she couldn't bare the thought of it afterwards either. Was a big meat eater before, but she's been a veggie ever since and he's 30 now! X

I think I've got some sort of milk/dairy intolerance - spending a couple of days going dairy free to see what happens and I've gone with Alpro Almond Milk (unsweetened) - sizethree I had my first cuppa with it this morning and it seems ok - no curdling Smile

applecore0317 · 14/03/2015 12:44

skeppers have you tried soya milk, I was lactose intolerant for years and used to have soya lattes and then alpro soya light on my cereal, I am so used to the taste now that I prefer it to milk which I built up a tolerance to in the end :) Now in pregnancy it's actually soya milk that doesn't agree with me lol

Have never had an issue with soya milk curdling in hot drinks, only ever happened if it was a carton that had been open for a while

and it's perfect for lattes as never need any sugar :)

crazycatlady82 · 14/03/2015 14:48

Try lactose free milk xx
