What can I eat that won't give me heartburn?

I've got an awful cough and was awake last night with a combination of coughing and heartburn. Coughed so much I was sick a few times (which was nice)

The original plan was to eat early every night but I haven't managed it. Again.

Any ideas? I'm only 17 weeks ffs

Can't help you, Newtonupontheheath, but i'm watching; this could be me... have had the cough for about 5 or 6 weeks now and keep getting woken up with heartburn. The only thing that seems to help the heartburn is ice cream (i think it kind of floats on top of the acid and it doesn't burn anywhere near so much). Not helping the health and waistline though!

If the heartburn is really bad and gaviscon/rennie don't help your gp/mw can prescribe you ranitadine. Works wonders for me. I suffer from heartburn constantly, it's so bad some days it makes me physically sick, so being pregnant makes it unbearable.
Trial and error as to what brings it on is another thing I find useful (but I've had about 6 years to work it out!) I can't eat anything starchy like bread, pasta, pastry, potatoes, etc. My brother suffers badly too and finds that dairy helps, try a glass of milk, a yoghurt or some ice cream as pp suggested.

I had really bad heartburn with DD1 and haven't suffered as badly this time round. Things I have done differently= eat earlier, don't eat oily/greasy foods for dinner, avoid anything heavily spiced, chilli or sour. As above dairy can help. I find a mug of hot milk really soothing before bedtime and helps me sleep much better as well.

Stop eating wheat. Wheat caused my heartburn while pregnant. With my friend it was anything gluten, so she had to be stricter.

If it's really bad - when I'm pregnant even water gives me heartburn - go and see your GP and get some Omeprazole.

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 12/03/2015 22:45

Wheat causes it for me too, my current pregnancy us the only one that I have eaten very little wheat in. If I do slip up and eat it then I really suffer.

In my other pregnancies I was prescribed ranitidine from early on at a higher dose than you can get OTC. It really helped.

It doesn't seem to matter what i eat, when i eat, i will get heartburn and i will wretch and wail and curse.
I suffer with ibs pre-pregnancy, but while pregnant have delved back into the world of junk and gluten, and i dont care, im hungry so gimme, my ibs is on holiday.
The acid doesn't seem to be connected to anything in particular at all for me, even water sets me off, its simply the baby stealing all the room in my tum.
Gaviscon, as much as the consistency makes me gag, has been a life saver! I've had a cough since the second trimester, and im 36 & 3 now, with the most horrific acid. Combined, i have been warbling into the porcelain microphone or whatever recepticle is nearest when i cough hard enough to puke. It sucks and its maddening, but try to track what you eat, cut greasy food, add more natural yoghurt and get yourself a bag of cough sweets!

Thanks all. In the end I went for dairylea on wholemeal toast. I didn't get heartburn (yey!) but I was, and am, still up coughing.

I will go to the mw or gp for gaviscon but was literally swigging it straight from the bottle in my last two pregnancies so trying to manage it better by what/when I eat.

Spicy, strong, greasy foods are out for evening meals, as a large portions... Should be a fun 5 months Hmm

Sorry to hear you're struggling! I'm currently 34 weeks and haven't really suffered with heartburn... yet. I had the sickness instead, up until about 16/17 weeks, including nausea that was literally 24/7.
When I do get mild heartburn I tend to drink milk (I have full fat milk, no idea if that counts for anything, though) or a plain fruit flavour yoghurt. So I would say dairy helps overall, but for me some chocolate bars give me a tinge of heartburn, but that could be the cocoa.

Hope the heartburn eases off for you Brew

I only suffer when I eat wheat too

Ooooooooh · 13/03/2015 07:04

I react to mars because of the barley malt ingredient which is gluten.

newtonupontheheath · 13/03/2015 08:37

Mmmm mars bar Grin

I'm already off meat (morning sickness) hash browns (craving that I sicked up the other day) and limes (dh made me a Limey-honey drink for my cough and it crippled me with heartburn)

Luckily I can still manage greggs pasties and melon.

Think that's all my regular foods covered Grin

Aw poor you. I lived off Mcvities cheese cracker things, the occasional fries from mcdonalds, and erm I can't actually think of anything else! In the very beginning I loved M&S lemon curd and like yoghurts, but then quickly went off them and even now I think 'eurgh'. I used to love cooking chicken fillets from fresh but since being pregnant I don't! Just not appealing to me at all now Confused
I lost about a stone in the first few months, and although I haven't put lots of weight on, I'm making up for all of the non-eating! I'm sure you will too Thanks
