I am only just 4 weeks pg but it took ages to get here and I am so aware of how common m/c are, so I am trying to do all I can to minimise the risk, even if most of these are old wives tales ! (and I do know that if it's going to happen it prob will no matter what I do but still I think it helps me to relax if I feel i'm in control of some things and doing my best).

Can anyone add to the list of things you should/shouldn't do in first 14 weeks:

Should cut out coffee/down on tea (am drinking decaf)
No alcohol
Eat some brazil nuts every day to keep selenium levels up
No vit A in multivitamin (pregnacare)
Take the electric blanket off the bed (??!!)
Obviously avoid the usual no-no foods for pregnancy
Relaxing (as much as I can !)

anything else?

Congratulations!!

I had that horrible mild cramping for weeks, which very nearly drove me insane. It's so hard at the early stage, but people told me to relax and try to enjoy what was happening and I could only fret, which is completely and utterly natural and understandable.

I would add - get lots of support from MN and know that you can share any concerns with fantastic people who understand and will offer support. While this may not alter too much physically, it can make all the difference emotionally!!!

Congratulations BigBird ! TBH, apart from eating well but avoiding the no-no foods as you say, I don't think there's much you can do. Relax if you can, but I don't think a bit of fretting makes any difference to the outcome, honestly! Good luck and come over to the `pg after m/c' thread if you want to do some group fretting .

Relax.......... and try not to be neurotic about what you eat or drink!

BB, I am 10 wks with a long-awaited pregnancy and am trying to take no chances. I cut coffe right out and I limit tea to 3 or 4 cups a day. I eat as much organic as possible, drink water when I remember and take baby aspirin. There is lots of discussion about baby aspirin, there is quite alot of evidence it helps women who have miscarried several times and in such a low dose it cant do any harm (so I've been told by an ob/gyn and a midwife). There are some other threads here on aspirin. I'll find a link for you. Some American doctors prescribe it routinely to pregnant women so if you look at American sites you might find out more.

here is one link

Another supporter of low dose aspirin here - thins the blood to enable better flow to uterous.

I also took progesterone suppositories for 1st 12 weeks, but those were prescribed.
Good luck!

Congrats. bigbird. I understand how you feel about doing everything in your power to be "safe" as possible so that you feel in control of such a huge and exciting event. Sounds like you are doing ok.
Best thing you can do is to get enough sleep and find a short time everyday to stop and relax. I took a half hours bath at the end of each working day and would just totally relax with a nice fruit mocktail, having time to think about what was going on in my body, chill out and read those baby mags and just take time getting my head around it all.

Eat healthy, in general. Drink loads of water. Cut down on candy and chewing gum and caffeine.

a friend who has antiphospholipid syndrome was warned against baby aspirin (it can cause miscarriage, she takes heparin under medical supervision when pregnant), so do get checked out first if you want to take anything.
