Thinking of having a 4D scan. Thought it would be nice as my mum can come as well as my partner, but also for reassurance that everything is going ok for me. I've heard they can be bad for the baby though! Thoughts??

Is there and evidence for this? I haven't seen any suggestions that they're bad for the baby. Some people like to avoid all unnecessary scans but I don't think there's any evidence it can cause problems. I may be wrong though.

I'm pretty sure its not bad for the baby but only because most of us only get two scans on nhs but there are loads of people who get loads of extra scans - for growth or if a mother has a high bmi - and i think it is exactly the same.

I could of course be wrong but I hope not since I went for two 4d scans Blush

I'm 23 weeks and have had 5 scans already this pregnancy due to various issues.

Where have you read it's bad for the baby? It's no more invasive than a normal scan...

I had 2d and 3d scans every day at the end due to iugr. I was comforted by the fact that a dr friend popped the scanner on herself whenever she had a spare moment at work.

We have no scientific evidence they are harmful (yet - there is always the possibility that one day something will be found) they aren't totally benign because I think they found links to left handedness in boys (nothing wrong with it but it obviously can have some effect on the fetus) and there has been suggestion of hearing loss being linked in some babies.

We don't have any evidence because it's not ethical to do the studies (according to my old midwife)

Because of this I don't think it's medically recommended that people have unnecessary or extended ones.

If anyone does have them I would be careful that the sonographer is medically trained and not where some people have them in shopping centres etc because I assume there's always a risk of malfunctioning equipment

It depends what you class uneccessary though - some people I think find it helps them bond

Fwiw I had extra scans in my pregnancy and it caused me more worry than reassurance so I wouldn't go for it again

I am 29 weeks and have had 7 scans! Some for medical reasons as i bled alot in early pregnancy and then the 12 wk and 20 wk and then i had a gender scan and a 3d/4d scan! There is no risk to baby! It is all sound waves and nothing dangerous! Here is a pic of my 3d scan that i had on friday!!
