Bio oil - best thing for stretch marks

I'm 8 weeks and wondered when I should start using bio oil (or another equivalent) to stop stretch marks? Does Bio Oil work the best?

Apparently nothing works as these oils and lotions don't penetrate the skin enough, so it's all pointless. It will help with itching as your skins stretches though. You will get stretch marks or you won't. I think if you are going to get them you can't do anything to prevent it. Bio oil may help afterwards though to fade the scars.

I spent a fortune on mamma mio products in my first pregnancy and still got stretch marks late on in pregnancy when my bump dropped. I was gutted at the time. This pregnancy I am using bio oil (waaay cheaper) and Neals Yard as a treat and if nothing else it makes my skin feel lovely! I think I will end up adding to my relatively small collection of stretch marks anyway though. Try not to obsess over them anyway, I think it's probably largely genetic. Certainly don't blow your budget on products. X

Nothing stops stretchmarks, they are to do with genetics and how.much elasticity is in your skin. Bio oil and other products don't stop them, they improve the appearance of them afterwards, same as they do with scars, making them softer and a bit paler.

Bio oil is definitelly far from best!
The first ingedient is mineral oil which is definitelly not good to be rubbing on the skin. It is petrolatum based product which just sits on the sufrace of the skin and clogs it.

You can easily and cheaper just create your own mixture of natural- plant based oils which help with scaring and will penetrate better.
Initially you would need to invest more but you will get much more product.

I think 8 weeks is too early, but there is nothing wrong with moisturizing the skin, you will start feeling your belly itching is you skin stretches and is too dry.

Bio oil is fab. Quite surprised to read views that you can do nothing about stretch marks. I disagree. During puberty, I got dreadful stretch marks on inner thighs and feared my bump would suffer same fate. Slathered on the bio oil from early doors and didn't get a single stretch mark. Not one!

lostindubai · 08/03/2015 22:33

I used bio oil from about 12 weeks pregnant. Didn't get any stretch marks. However I did get stretch marks on my legs from growing as a teenager. Just saying.

youngestisapyscho · 08/03/2015 22:35

My teen dd has some stretch marks appearing on inner thighs and hips... I was going to get her some bio oil.... Should I still bother? Is there anything else that would help?

InTheWhiteRoom · 08/03/2015 22:35

Bio oil doesn't work, I used it religiously in my first 2 pregnancies and still got covered in stretch marks

The only thing that helped was pure coconut oil which I used daily in my third and got none at all. It's also faded my old ones to nothing.

lostindubai · 08/03/2015 22:35

Oh, same as you cheeky Grin

mswibble · 08/03/2015 22:41

I hate Bio Oil. It makes me so itchy and I could scratch myself to shreds trying to scrape it off. I don't believe anything will stop them, unfortunately if you're going to get them you will.
I'm 33wks and have almost a band of them stretching from each hip round under my bump, and few round my belly button - I was devastated when I they started. However I have been smothering myself in Palmers Skin Therapy Oil every morning and night and it has definitely helped with them. Already they look less angry and red, my skin is wonderfully smooth. Plus I go to bed smelling of chocolate which is lovely!

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 08/03/2015 22:53

The damage is deep in the tissue. Any moisturiser will do the same job.

Dogsmom · 08/03/2015 23:02

I don't think anything works and have read it's in your genes.

I've got a few on my inner things and muffin tops from my overweight days but didn't get any on my bump with either pregnancy yet gained over 4 stones the first time and had a good sized bump with both. Didn't use any kind of lotions with either.
Mom didn't get them so I kept fingers crossed it really was genetic and seems so.

Dogsmom · 08/03/2015 23:02

Inner thighs not inner things!!

McFox · 08/03/2015 23:08

I used my usual sweet almond oil that I cleanse with and have no stretch marks.

pinkie87 · 09/03/2015 08:13

Cheeky and lost it's a fact rather than a view. You are both lucky you didn't get stretch marks but unfortunately this had nothing to do with the bio oil you used.

sianihedgehog · 09/03/2015 08:21

Bio oil gives me a wicked rash. And as others have said, nothing can stop stretch marks. Eat healthily, use whatever moisturiser you like just because it feels nice, and embrace the idea that stretch marks are wicked cool scars that mean you've done something bad ass.

Skiptonlass · 09/03/2015 10:39

Dons white coat...

Stretch marks occur when the Middle layer of your skin (the dermis) is stretched and the collagen matrix tears. The gold standard of scientific gathering-together-of-data is the cochrane meta review, linked below for your pleasure. Nothing is proven to, or even casually correlated with being able to prevent them. It's basically down to your skin type, hormone levels, body mass, yada yada.

I personally love me a bit of monoi for skin care, but I'm well aware I like it because it smells delightful and stops me being a dry, itchy, scaly beast. It does de nada for prevention. Slather on whatever you like, but if you're getting them, you're getting them.

Yeah agree it's just down to luck, I'm pregnant with dc3 and never had stretch marks, sporadically moisturise if I remember. Likewise, my mum and sister didn't get any so defo a family thing. Guess it doesn't do any harm to try an oil but don't spend a fortune xx

AuntieStella · 09/03/2015 14:26

It is basically luck and your genes that determine whether you get stretch marks.

If you like Bio-oil, use it. But it's basically mineral oil (same as Johnson's baby oil) with different smell and marketing.

OrinocoTheWomble · 09/03/2015 14:35

Olive oil does the job and is a fraction of the price. I bought a slightly more expensive (non whiffy) olive oil.

OddFodd · 09/03/2015 14:46

I put nothing on and got no stretch marks. No one in my family gets them

Gunpowder · 09/03/2015 14:50

Agreed nothing can stop them, but I have used sweet almond oil with a couple of drops each of mandarin, neroli and lavender essential oil in both pregnancies which smells gorgeous and makes me feel like I'm doing something.

ouryve · 09/03/2015 14:53

Nothing can stop stretch marks.

It does make them more comfortable, though, as they can get quite itchy.
