Constant stomach upset during early pregnancy

I'm 15+3 and have had a stomach upset for weeks now, not bad enough to be full on diarrhoea and only going once a day (sorry TMI!) but all the literature on the NHS website and from my midwife advises of constipation instead of this!

I've had two scans so far which were both fine, but having also had 2 MC's for which an upset stomach (although more explosive than I've been getting with this pregnancy - sorry TMI again!) was an early indicator for both, it still worries me.

I spoke to my midwife during the first appointment, and my doctor, who both gave me very vague 'it's just one of those things' answers but weren't very reassuring with why it's happening!

Is anyone else getting this or has had this, or can shed any light on why it happens if it's a normal symptom?

The hormones of early pregnancy affect the bowels. Sometimes it causes constipation, sometimes it makes things looser.

I was like you with all pregnancies and had really loose movements for the first 17 weeks or so. I've seen many threads about it. It's normal.

Maybe normal for you (not much help, I know).
Could you keep a food diary & see if anything makes a difference?
I went lactose intolerant in all of my pregnancies for first 7 months or so. I vomitted instead of your problem (oh joy).

Thanks showy I've not heard that before.

ragged I thought about food intolerance as I've a couple of pre-pregnancy intolerances but they tend to show within a couple of hours of eating whatever it is. I do drink a lot of milk though inc. a pre-bedtime cuppa so perhaps it is a dairy thing

I've had this the whole time since about 8 weeks, 33 now. Clearly it's just what my body does during pregnancy...beats constipation and all the related problems, even if it's not the most pleasant symptom either!

Ooooooooh · 08/03/2015 12:13

Can you stop having milk for 3 days, then report back

If that doesn't help, try going gluten free for three days and report back

Ooooooooh · 08/03/2015 12:15

I had issues and they were specifically wheat related. Very very low key while not pregnant, much more intense while pregnant until I gave it up

I chopped and changed from a runny tummy to constipation in early pregnancy, now 27 weeks, I think it is just 'one of those things'. Keep an eye on it though, and perhaps try what ooooh suggested. I don't think the worrying that comes with pregnancy helps either!

Bogal · 08/03/2015 13:10

Haven't figured out how to switch off the 'worry' bit of my brain Smile
Think I'll give the no milk thing a go and see how that works. Too late to start today though I'm already on my second cuppa!

I'm 23 weeks and I've never suffered with the constipation it's been very much the other way and has been since day one. Like others have said it's probably what's right for you xx

I was like that in the first trimester and found that the the pregnancy vitamins I was on were really strong and upset my stomach, switched to pregnacare and they also upset my stomach and then went onto Sanatogen Mum to be which were much better
