I have low amniotic fluid at present and am being induced early-was very closely monitored once it was identified and now they feel the time has come to bring baby out-34 weeks.Baby doesn't have a small bladder though so I'm afraid I don't have experience of this, baby is v small though (IUGR) which means it will need special care after delivery but not sure what to expect at the minute other than a small baby.It can all feel very scary so I really sympathise.
What have the doctors said?

lilmamma · 08/03/2015 11:48

it is my sons baby, they have told her to have bed rest for 3 weeks and drink a gallon of water a day, which sounds like quite a lot. One doctor couldn't find the babies bladder, so another came in and he found it but said it is small, so was wondering if she can make the fluid increase would the bladder grow ? I have never heard of this before, she is 17 weeks.

It's odd because I hear about other people being advised this but my consultant said that what I eat or drink has no bearing on amniotic fluid level as it is produced by baby and unless they thought I was dehydrated there would be no point.I was also never advised bedrest, but then I think as this is my third they realised that it would be more stress for me than help so I was just told to take it as easy as possible.
They did schedule me for weekly appointments once they noticed it to keep an eye on it and I am now being induced about 6 weeks early.
The 20 week anomaly scan will probably tell you more about the issue to do with bladder size. Sorry can't be more help, hope it all goes well.

Thankyou so much for your replies and hope all goes well with you and the baby :) my son lives in America so it is hard, that iam not closer to help her out with the children, they have 4 little boys and this one is a little girl, and my daughter is overdue, so its a worrying time, happy for her and sad for him, hopefully things might sort themselves out.

That makes sense, when I googled at the start it seemed that everyone was being told to drink loads of water except me but then I saw that is in the US where the standard advice must be different.
It is manageable, mine was only picked up at 32 weeks but when I looked up online and i had a thread on here too about it it did seem that it is more common than I thought. It is always more worrying the earlier things happen but hopefully all will be ok,will be thinking of you and your son and his family. They really do like to keep us on our toes these little ones don't they?!

congratulations on your little girl :) my son rang last night and said she went for another scan yesterday and the fluid has filled up, they don't know why but are delighted, he said she had a longish scan with a different doctor and the nurse said they don't usually measure for the water at such an early date, he said they were so delighted and they said everything looked normal, that he forgot to ask about the bladder, but I said im sure if it was still small they would have said something. Also she is back on bed rest and still told to drink the gallon of water. I said to him about the water and he said well maybe its the same sort of thing with people with a bad diet, the food goes in their stomach, yet still clogs up the hearts artiries, so maybe the water going in her stomach somehow reaches the baby all a mystery, but at least it good news for now and as he said no so much doom and gloom, so just keeping everything crossed it will stay at the right level, and hope all goes well for you, not long now :)
