Underwire bra's during pregnancy?

I've heard a lot of people mention you shouldn't wear underwire bra's when pregnant, but the only explanation I seem to find is they could be uncomfortable. Is this the case? And does that mean if your bra is still comfortable it's alright to keep the underwire?

Currently 22wks pregnant with twins, started out as an A cup and still seem to be a comfortable A cup, just with a very slight added cleavage now! No new bra size needed for me yet which is why I'm wondering if it's alright just to keep wearing my regular ones in already have

3rd time pregnant here - Am still wearing normal underwired bras. I figure I'll have so much time with fugly bras (planning to breastfeed, can't afford new pretty ones) later I'm not starting early!

I was recently fitted at John Lewis where I was advised you should avoid underwire due to the amount your breast tissue will grow and how the wire will sit. I was 9 weeks at the time and had gone up three sizes...they recommend a really comfy bra that was only £14.

I've worn underwired the entire time. I'm a 36J so soft bras tend not to offer the support I need...

RoganJosh · 06/03/2015 21:09

There's a problem with them if they squash actual breast tissue and therefore milk ducts. So if you get well fitting ones it's fine. Same goes for nursing bras.

My small boobs didn't get any bigger in either of my pregnancies and I carried on wearing my underwired bras all the way through.

Underwire is meant to be bad for bf...

I have 3dc and have bf all to 1yr +. I wore underwired bras throughout all 3 pregnancies and post birth. I refused to have boobs! I had no problems feeding AT ALL. Perhaps I'm just lucky...?

There's no actual evidence that underwires are a problem in pregnancy and bf.

You will risk mastitis if your bra doesn't fit properly, but this is just as likely with softcup bras.

If it's comfy then it's fine. You may have to change size during pregnancy (back size as well due to rib cage expanding) and your breasts may get considerably bigger after your milk comes in so watch particularly carefully for poor fit around then.

I had Anita underwired feeding bras and they were fantastic. I'm Angry that I wasted ££ on several ill fitting soft bras before I found them.

And your wires shouldn't rest on breast tissue ever not just in pregnancy. If they do then you're wearing the wrong size.

hestialou · 07/03/2015 06:41

I think the issue with underwire is that they need changing a lot as you grow or shrink. Non underwired can offer good support. I've gone from 32h to 36h, so need a lot of support and the non underwired I got does the job, just get properly fitted. OP have a fitting to ensure you are wearing right size. Mothercare were helpful for me.

marriednotdead · 07/03/2015 07:12

As others have said, your bra wire should never rest on breast tissue regardless of whether or not you are pregnant.
The shape of the underwire may affect comfort in the later stages, especially if you're fairly big busted or the bump is very high, but for most people it's absolutely fine.
I don't understand stores who refuse to sell wired bras to pregnant women, and personally see it as a negative opinion of their own fitting skills!

m33r · 07/03/2015 08:12

I was a 32g before I got pg. Throughout pg I spent money on soft cup but they offered no support and didn't sit right at all (despite a personal home fitting).

I eventually eent to m&s and spent £5 on bra extenders (for back size) and although I don't think the cup size is perfect, they don't squash me (I ise two extenders).

Not sure if this will affect my bf-ing as am only 38+2.

sianihedgehog · 07/03/2015 09:04

If they fit well and don't sit on breast tissue they're fine. But you'll probably need a bunch of different sizes, because your breasts will change throughout pregnancy. I started as a 34b, which is the size I've been for more than 20 years, but I'm up to 34/36d at 18 weeks, and have bought new bras twice already. And I'm finding they go both up and down in size.

Stretchy soft cup would definitely make sense from a value point of view if I wasn't happy going to primark every few weeks for cheap new underwired bras!

MissTwister · 07/03/2015 09:47

I went to Bravissimo and they said underwire is fine (thank God). There is absolutely no evidence that wires have an effect on milk ducts either!

HazleNutt · 07/03/2015 10:51

Underwire is fine, for both pregnancy and breastfeeding. Yes, you will probably need to buy several new bras, as your size will change. But that was better option for me than the sweaty droopy monoboob that I got with non-wired bras.

BadIdeaBear · 07/03/2015 12:30

Hi bex I'm still in underwired at 21+6. Started off as a B cup and they still fit well, just with a little more umph at the top end of the cup (cleavage, yay!), which sounds similar to you.

As long as the wires don't squash anything, there's no problem. I did used to sometimes sleep in bras too, but I can't do that anymore (the wires are well annoying), so might invest in a soft cup for night-times when I fancy staying in a bra...

D00dles · 07/03/2015 14:40

I've grown to an e cup and still wear underwired bra. Did thoughout my pregnancy with DD and while I breast fed. I hate the shape of non-wired bras

AnythingNotEverything · 07/03/2015 14:48

It's all been said, but yes, wired bras are fine as long as they fit correctly.

I wore wires until birth last time and have had two fittings so far this pregnancy, now 25 weeks.

For bf, I bought one non wired for the first few days to see my milk in and then another in a smaller cup size a week or so after birth. By 12 weeks I was so fed up I converted my wired bras from pregnancy to nursing bras as I shrunk back through the sizes.

AnythingNotEverything · 07/03/2015 14:50

Meant to add - currently a 34J so do need the wires.

I hope you're all measuring without adding inches and not the M&S/Mothercare way Smile
