Is anyone else fat and newly pregnant?

Gah. I am delighted to be pregnant (am 4wks today) but my BMI is 30.8, just tipping me into the 'obese' category. How lovely.

If I lost 4lbs I would be back into the overweight category, meaning I'm not as high-risk as I currently am, but obviously it's not advisable to attempt to lost weight in pregnancy.

Does anyone else have experience of this? I'm thinking of taking up walking and seeing if that helps in any way...I just really don't want the associated problems with being fat, GD, hypertension, pre-eclampsia etc etc, as well as always having planned a home birth. Help!

Don't worry at all! My BMI was 32 at booking appt and there was no issues at all. Midwife actually thought I looked fine and I didn't even have a GTT test.

Thank you. If anything, that sounds more reassuring than midwife care! I am only planning birth on a hospital labour ward as I am not big on pools so that isn't a problem. Thank you for letting me know.

My BMI was 37 at booking; I'm now 18+2 and haven't gained any weight thus far which is fine as I was overweight to start. My midwife has made me an appointment with a consultant just as a matter of course, but- as my bloods/urine/BP have all been spot on thus far and I'm actually quite fit for my weight (I used to run and now walk/exercise daily)- she thinks that the consultant will give me the once over and say that they are happy for me to continue with MW led care. The only difference is that I may get a couple of extra growth scans to check that baby isn't getting too big, but as far as I'm concerned that's a bonus as it'll reassure me (hopefully) that all is going to plan!

I'm not planning on a home birth or anything like that; I want ALL of the drugs/pain relief/access to medical equipment I can get so it doesn't make too much difference to me personally, but don't assume that just because your BMI is slightly high that it will automatically lead to problems. In fact, the only two people I know who have had pregnancy complications were both very slim. Your home birth will most probably be fine! Smile
