Hello! Complete newbie here. Got a positive test just before the weekend - I rang GP surgery this morning and they've booked me into see a practice nurse later this week. Anyone able to tell me what to expect at this first appointment? Thanks!

Congratulations!
First app with midwife tends to be long. They take your medical history, close relatives (mum, dad, siblings) and any of your partners that may be relevant. Booked me in for a scan too. Nothing else spectacular but any advice or questions answered too.

Sorry just re read your op. Not sure why you see the practice nurse first? At our gps they just book you straight in with mw?

No me neither - which prompted the question. I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait to find out (which I'm not very good at doing!). Thanks though for useful info about first midwife appointment. Very helpful.

Our Dr would usually see you before referring to the midwife so I suppose the practice nurse will do the same thing.

He usually takes a brief history, does some basic checks and that's that.

They give you loads of leaflets and give you information (what not to eat drink etc) , talk through medical history and any worries

My practice wanted to see me simply to do the referral. They took my blood pressure and that was about it! Not seen mw yet.

I had to see my GP first bit was the most pointless appointment ever. He filled in an on screen referral form while I sat next to home giving him the answers. It took ages as he kept misspelling things and getting dates wrong. He then printed the firm and I had to hand it in at the reception. I could have sat in the waiting room and filled in the form in a fraction of the time without taking up an appointment!

Same experience as Eurochick. Had first appointment with GP on Monday. Filled out form, took pressure, said since BMI normal and no other issues am a low risk case and will be midwife led, reluctantly and uncomfortably asked about my mood and gave vague 'advice' about 'like eat properly and avoid cheese' wtf I then took form to reception. They gave me the green book called pregnancy notes and said midwife will call me to diarise the first booking appointment which she hasn't.

PS it will be the most anti-climactic, mundane visit to the Gp/nurse you'll ever have and you might well leave feeling a bit meh about it all.

ilooktothehills · 06/03/2015 07:52

Thanks all. Will debrief on 'meh' rating later!

Hi - I've just found out i'm pregnant this week and had to meet with the GP first, he just asked gave me a form to completed for free prescriptions, asked when my last period was and told me my due date. Then filled out a form, asked which hospital i wanted to have the baby in and asked how long i was trying to conceive. Then just told me the midwife would be in contact in a few weeks.
