30 weeks and itching like a crazy lady

An 30weeks with baby #2 and in the last 2 weeks or so, I have started itching everywhere. I didn't have anything like this with DD, and I can't work out what is causing it. No major change in that time to washing powder/ body cream. It's driving me to distraction. Is there anything I can take? Are anti histamines ok at this stage?

I think you need to talk to your mw. Itching is a symptom of something, can't remember what but it needs checking out.

I had horrific itching in my second pregnancy which started around 30 weeks. It turned out I had obstetric cholestasis. Might be worth a word
With your gp/midwife to rule it out? I also had dark urine despite drinking tonnes.
I've no idea about antihistamines though. Best of luck Flowers

It could be obstetric cholestasis. I had it with dd. You need to see your midwife to be tested (it's a blood test they send away).

Ah. Ok- guess I eill try to see GP tmw then. I assumed I was just becoming allergic to everything.
I have been so run down this pregnancy :( I have had a near constant cough and sinus issues and now this. Feeling very sorry for myself at the moment!

My lower legs were awful at about 30 weeks (I'm now 32+4), they itched so much they started bleeding, ouch!

I spoke to both the midwife and the GP and they both told me if it wasn't my bump, then they didn't need to worry. My GP suggested trying e45 itch relief cream plus hydrocortisol peroxide, both of which were available from a pharmacist.

Within two days it cleared up and I've not had any problems since.

Hi, I know itching is common in pregnancy, but at present count the kicks are raising awareness of a condition called ICP, I don't know what it stands for I am sorry.
It can cause still birth, I don't want to scare you and itching is also very common due to hormone changes. I didn't want to read your post and not comment.
I would speak to your gp definitely.

Xxx

Op pls popto see your gp / midwife / walk in centre, I think it can be related to kidney function, I had it, just mentioned it to gp on off chance, took a blood test, the next day I had a phone call and was monitired in hospital for a few hours. I'm sure it's a warning suign of kidney function in pregnancy

I'm sure it will be ok but your body is telling you it's not tip top! Smile

I had Obstetric Cholestasis in my last pg, itching especially palms of hand and soles of feet at night is a symptom. You need to talk to your midwife, I was given medication to manage it and needed to be induced early. There is a link between OC and stillbirth so it's definitely worth getting in touch with the midwife

girliefriend · 02/03/2015 20:30

You need to speak to your midwife and have some bloods done, could be liver or kidneys. I had obstetric cholestasis and it drove me demented!!

ArcheryAnnie · 02/03/2015 20:38

I'm another one who had Obstetric Cholestasis, and the itching drove me mad, too.

If that's what it is, be reassured - the itching stops the INSTANT you give birth (I don't know how).

In the meantime, you get given a cocktail of drugs (half of them say "do not take during pregnancy", but don't worry, they won't harm the baby), and there are various things that help the itching, a bit.

It is standard practice, I believe, to induce a couple of weeks early, in order to protect the baby.

It was scary at first, but honestly, it's a well-treated condition and it will be fine! And you will be SO HAPPY once the itching stops.

There can be lots of reasons for itching in pregnancy but yes, oc is one and should be checked out.

In the meantime, moisterizer is your friend. Try aloe Vera gel to soothe it. And when you see gp ask about being prescribed menthol creams as they can help too.
