Because it is aged for at least 18 months and any listeria wouldn't live that long iirc.
Not sure about chorizo, probably the same as salami.

I think it's soft cheeses that are the ones that you aren't allowed. Hard cheeses are ok. Why? I dont know! But at least you can have it!

Dont know about chorizo...

Thanks cc and dad - know it is a bizzare question but I couldn't find an answer anywhere !

yep, they say that there's such a tiny amount of listeria in hard cheeses that there's no real risk.
Look at the centre for pregnancy nutrition website - sheffield. they answer questions too. (no time to look for address for you - is on an earlier cheese thread though!)
Is chorizo raw (just cured/smoked) meat? if so then the answer is they say don't, because of the possibility of toxoplamosis.

can I eat blue cheese if I put it in a risotto and its hot? Any ideas - sorry for hijacking!

aDadOnMumsnet · 25/10/2006 17:28

nope, dont think so.

aDadOnMumsnet · 25/10/2006 17:29

my dp just gave birth one week ago, and we have been catching up on the blue cheese front .

I think it's one of the hardest things about pregnancy for her, as a cheese loving veggie.

harrogatemum · 25/10/2006 17:30

oh poo, bought some gorgonzola today as could not resist and thought that way I could eat it...........

KathyDCLXVI · 25/10/2006 17:32

Just eat it and keep your fingers crossed.

harrogatemum · 25/10/2006 17:45

well I am 36 weeks now - when is it supposed to be really dangerous?

binkacat · 25/10/2006 17:54

You can eat gorgonzola as long as its been cooked.

"Can I eat Brie and blue cheese when I'm pregnant if it's cooked?
Pregnant women are advised against eating these types of cheese because of the risk of listeria. However, thorough cooking should kill any listeria, so it should be safe to eat food containing soft mould-ripened or blue-veined cheeses, provided it has been properly cooked and is piping hot all the way through."
