Bump measuring 26 at 29 weeks

When do I worry?? The midwife was not overly concerned but I stupidly googled iugr and scared myself!

I also went to mat assessment for fluid leakage last week but they gave me the all clear (examined cervix). I've had previous PPROM.
Should I insist on a scan or wait 3 weeks for next antenatal appointment?

Aw try not to worry. I am the same though and worry myself sick about things. If you need to put your mind at rest then could you call the midwives office? And see what they suggest. I think they give within 3/4cm either way before they look into it properly, don't they?

Bigbadgeorge · 27/02/2015 20:59

Yep she said their cut off was 4cm. I am just a terrible worrier (and addicted to google). Maybe I'll just give them a ring on Monday like you suggest
Thanks :-)

I measured 3cm behind all through my last pregnancy - baby was transverse and perfectly normal size. If you're worried, call them.

Peony58890 · 27/02/2015 21:31

Mine were much further behind size wise but were all very healthy

I think that midwives measuring your bump is such a ridiculous victorian practice! Honestly I'm sure if three ppl did it they would all get different measurements as where precisely do they start and stop with the tape! And people carry differently depending on the length of their torso. I had a midwife measure me at 39 wks and she told me I was measuring 36cm - had a very stressful time waiting for emergency scan and baby was totally fine and sonographer totally rubbished antiquated tape measuring practice... Anyway rant over!! Please don't worry - I'm sure everything is absolutely fine

I really wouldn't worry too much. My bump was stupidly small. At 41 weeks it was 30cm, and DS was completely healthy. It is worth being monitored, but not measuring right does not in itself indicate a problem.

The flexibilty in measuring is to allow for differences in stature and position of the baby. A transverse baby will measure less than a cephalic baby. The measurement goes from the fundus (the top of your uterus) to your pubic bone. It isn't an exact science but it is a way of weeding out people who need a scan to check growth and may need follow up. Even scans are not exact, as many threads here will testify, but you have to try to identify IUGR, macrsomia etc some how. I would have seen you a week later to check for steady growth, but that is me. Hospitals have guidelines on this that the midwives follow. Try not to worry too much, if the baby is moving and you feel you are getting steadily bigger, that is all positive!

Hi there,
Last week at my 28 wk appointment, my midwife said I measured 25cm and steamrollered me into booking a scan. I have issues anyway with the care she is providing but that's a long, different story. I left the apt not happy at all: everything else was absolutely fine. My blood and urine tests, the heartbeat, me and my health, the baby is a frequent and vigorous kicker, and it is definitely growing. She also pointed out that I am slim and have no stomach fat (yet...) and I know my baby was lying in transverse. All factors which easily contribute to smaller measurement.
After much stressful thinking and talking with my husband that night, (we'd already agreed we didn't want anymore scans, as we had had an 'extra' one as the little stubborn darling wouldn't present its rear or legs for measurement at the 20wk scan) I decided to call the local midwife team to have a chat with someone (hopefully) other than 'my' midwife.
She was lovely and was perfectly happy to cancel the scan and put me at complete rest over the fact that I have choices in this pregnancy and she discussed the inaccuracy of the fundal measurement itself. WHY do they still do it?!

My advice would be go with your gut, there have been various things along this pregnancy when I have made decisions to go with my gut and I have been 'right' every time. If going for a scan will reassure you then do it. If you'd rather wait and see till your next midwife appointment, do that. Your mind needs to be at rest with YOUR decisions so you do not stress.
Good luck!

I measured 3 to 4 weeks behind from 28 weeks to the end of my pregnancy. I had a much smaller bump than during my first pregnancy and probably didn't look more than 7 or 8 months gone by the very end. We had extra scans which told us that he 'might make it to 6lbs'. As it turns out DS2 was perfectly healthy and weighed in at a lovely 6lbs15, nearly a pound heavier than they predicted and just an oz more than my DS1 who gave me a massive bump which measured dead on the whole way though. Every pregnancy is different and measuring babies in utero is pretty much guess work.

Bigbadgeorge · 28/02/2015 12:50

Thank you so much for everyone's reassuring posts, they have made me feel much better! My baby is also transverse, so maybe this was the issue. He is very lively so hopefully all is ok

My bump measured around 2 cm under for the last few weeks of pregnancy. DS was 9 lb 5oz!
