Is this within the realms of normal??

I am starting to freak out a bit.

Felt ds1 kicks from around 18 weeks I think.

Starting to worry there is something wrong with the baby (despite having heard a clear heartbeat at 16w appointment).

Are some babies just less 'kicky' than others??

Will the MW think I am mad if I call her for reassurance?? Just everyone keeps saying you feel second babies early :-(

I remember being at my 20 week scan with DC2 and being asked if I was feeling movements, I wasn't, the baby is now 2 and eating her second bowl of cornflakes. Your little one might be a quiet one or kicking away happily but somewhere you don't feel it. You can always speak to the midwife or get an appointment if hearing a heartbeat will put your mind at rest though.

It may also be to do with placenta location. If you have an anterior placenta it may be cushioning any movement so you can't feel it yet.

You can get a difference in movement between babies though. I never felt any kicks from DD1 as she was facing my back the entire pregnancy so all I felt were bum shuffles. Now on DC2 I'm 20+4 with an anterior placenta and only just really starting to feel proper movement.

So I don't think it holds true that you do always feel second babies early.

Thank you! How would I know if I had an anterior placenta? I read the report from my 12 week scan and it's not mentioned on there...

Is this something I would need to wait until the 20 week scan to find out??

Yes, you'll have to wait until your 20 week scan to find that out, there's normally a sheet of paper with the baby's measurements and on there they tick whether the placenta is high or low and anterior or posterior. This info is based on my previous pregnancy which was 3 years ago, so things might have changed by now :)

Yep it's recorded at your 20 week scan. It's frustrating isn't it.

I had loads of people asking if I could feel movement yet when I couldn't. I think people say you feel it earlier because you recognise the movements as movements rather than anything else.

I had an anterior placenta, and didn't feel anything until about 28 weeks. I'd had scans, so knew the baby was okay, but it was very alarming for me. Once I felt movements though, they were more of the 'huge stomach rippling as the baby turns right around' type, rather than little kicks.

With my other child, I felt little movements at 13.5 weeks - so a big difference! Even if you don't have an anterior placenta, all babies are different and have different patterns of activity.

I had my 20 week scan today for my 2nd baby & found out I have an anterior placenta, hence not feeling much movement. I was the same & worrying as everyone saying I would feel it earlier this time around. Ask the sonographer when you go for your next scan.
