Athlete's Foot Treatment Safe?

ARGH! Just been to the pharmacy... and had the pharmacist look at me if I was insane because I asked if there was any issues using an athlete's foot antifungal cream while pregnant. Bought Daktarin Dual Action Cream, brought it home... read the leaflet inside and it says in big writing "if pregnant or breastfeeding consult your doctor before use".

Anyone know if this stuff is actually okay? Or do I have to wait until Monday to go back to the pharmacist and shout at him lots?

Just found this, GA (on netdoctor):

Does the Dual Action have hydrocortisone in? (That may be what it means by Dual I spose.)

Will see if I can find anything else.

I don't think the Daktarin does have hydrocortisone in - having seen a pic of the tube it's just the ordinary stuff...

This is the Daktacort HC ("triple action"!!!) and

this is the Daktarin. That's bog standard OTC, surely it's OK?

Or you could wait till Monday, wave the leaflet under his nose and give him a Hard Stare.

Hmm... looking at the netdoctor site (thanks for that - good site! Assuming netdoctor.co.uk is the one you mean?) Daktarin doesn't have the hydrocortisone in but the active ingredient is listed as "This medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than any possible risk to the foetus."

So basically, crappy pharmacist. Hard Stare definitely called for insert scowly face here

Looked up the Scholl version (I remember that was on the shelves too) and under Pregnancy and Breastfeeding it says: "There are no known harmful effects when this medicine is used by pregnant or breastfeeding mothers." so I guess I'm going back to get that one.

BLOODY pharmacist. They're supposed to tell you this stuff BEFORE you leave the premises.

This is what it says on the Daktarin licence (click on section 4.6 Pregnancy and Lactation). Basically it means they don't know for certain that it's not dangerous because they don't have the data (as with most medicines, there is very little data on use in pregnant women).

Miconazole (the active in Daktarin) is one of a group of antifungals called imidazoles. This group also includes clotrimazole, which is the active ingredient in Canesten. The Canesten licence is here (again, click on Section 4.6). Personally I would go for Canesten AF because there is a lot more data on the use of clotrimazole in pregnancy because it is also used for thrush.

I expect there is very little data on the Scholl one either, TBH.

I'm pretty sure I used both tolnaftate (in the Scholl one) and clotrimazole in my last pg and ds is OK (in a manner of speaking!).

HTH.

I had athlete's foot during while pregnant, and the obstetrician told me that it was better to treat it (I was using Daktarin) than to let it continue. Also, I use a Daktarin powder spray on my feet whenever I showered at the gym, and she said that was OK too. Just to be sure, I drape a towel over my foot and spray underneath it so that I don't breath the powder.

A very safe, if somewhat disgusting, treatment for ahtlete's foot is to pee on your feet, making sure that the urine gets between the toes onto the infected area.

Ew, prettycandles, thanks for that... I think

Dh popped out and got me some Scholl stuff (couldn't find the Canesten but thanks for the tip and the links gingernut). So I will treat it...

Thanks for all the messages, folks Mumsnet comes up trumps again...

I'm 6 weeks pregnant - I have just told my doctor, during the same appointment I told him I had a rash on my skin - He prescribed me Daktarin cream so I guess it's ok - however I suggest you check first with your doctor just in case
