Pregnant after ectopic

Hi, I had an ectopic pregnancy last year. The tube it was growing in was removed. I had a positive pregnancy test this morning which is fantastic news but I am also freaking out. The whole ordeal with the ectopic was so awful, I just don't know if I could bear it again. I know I need to contact the epu at the hospital and I just wondered if anyone had any experience of pregnancy after ectopic. I'm not sure what tests or procedures happen next.
Thanks in advance

Hi Rosie, firstly congratulations on your pregnancy.

I had a ruptured ectopic in 2011, it took a couple of years for me to conceive afterwards because of the removed tube (I seemed to be ovulating on that side mainly). As soon as I found out I was pregnant my GP referred me to the early pregnancy unit nearby and I was scanned.

I wanted to tell you what happened next, not to scare you but to show that scary things can work out - when I was scanned there was a sac but no heartbeat. I had to return in 2 weeks to rescan. That's totally normal because you have to scan early to check you don't have a repeat ectopic but it's often too early a gestation to see much. It's an internal scan, so a bit different to scans you might have had before, but not uncomfortable or anything.

Good luck at your scan, I will be thinking if you. I now have a bouncy 20 month old, so can vouch that it can work out!

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm so glad it has worked out for you.
I am cautiously optimistic about this pregnancy. My ectopic was due to 'unidentified causes' so my only risk factor is my history of ectopic. If that makes sense.
Thank you for letting me know what happened, that's exactly what I was hoping for. I wondered whether a scan could find anything at all at this point. I ended up with 4 internal scans last time so I am unfortunately well versed in those. I will contact my GP tomorrow to get the ball rolling.
Thank you again

My ectopic pregnancy was the same Rosie, no specific cause. I think that makes it worse because there is nothing you can do to improve it if you see what I mean. Hopefully they will see you quickly, and your mind can be put to rest. Best of luck!

Hi OP,

I has an ectopic as well, but luckily it was managed expectantly (no surgery, no medication). A few weeks after that I was hit by breast cancer diagnosis and had a surgery followed by 4 weeks radiation treatment early 2014. Now 17+3 weeks pregnant and all is well. I went for an early scan when I was about 5 weeks as this is when they are able to see if the pregnancy is in the right place. I was totally scared of another ectopic but the sonographer saw the yolk sac immediately in my womb and it was such a relief! She also checked to make sure there is no second foetus anywhere else apart from the womb (in case it's twins) and there was nothing else. So good luck to you and fingers crossed! :)

You are right, EPU is a priority. They'll probably to a scan - internal, just to check it has implanted in the right place. That is all the "non standard" test that I remember. I got called back 2 weeks later to check it was still lodged correctly (and that it wasn't twins - they didn't tell me that the first scan) After that it was the normal route, 12 weeks scan etc etc. My ectopic was my 2nd pregnancy so I was a frequent visitor at the EPU. I got lots of reassurance and ended up third time lucky with a fabulous boy.
Go to the EPU, whatever happens they are the right people to talk to. Keeping everything crossed for you!

Thanks so much for your responses. I am sorry to hear others have had such difficult times but so happy to hear your positive outcomes.
I spoke to the consultant I saw last time and I am seeing him in two weeks for a scan to find out if anything sinister is going on. That should be 6 weeks pregnant so hopefully they will have a clear view at that point. I have strict instructions to present at the hospital if I have any ectopic symptoms in the meantime but I am staying positive about it. I'll keep you updated. Thank you again Smile

That's great, we will all be thinking of you. It was only when I had my ectopic that I discovered how many people we knew had suffered them too, there are so many happy endings, stay positive!

Rosieliveson · 25/02/2015 17:33

I am already very lucky. My ectopic was also my second pregnancy. I do have a wonderful DS who is almost 18 months. He really got me through it last time. My DH and I had always hoped for a large family so losing my tube was really upsetting. Here's hoping the tube I have left is up to the job Smile

Scan tomorrow. Am flitting between feeling cautiously optimistic and being convinced I'm doomed. Only symptom so far is a touch of morning sickness. I have everything crossed!

Good luck op. I had two ectopics, with my tube removed the second time, and they told me that after that I had the same risk of ectopic as anyone else. I went on to have my second daughter after the surgery.
Odds are it will be fine for you.

And now I am in post ectopic pregnancy limbo again (I've just found out this afternoon and to say I am in shock is an understatement. I thought I was past it. I will shortly be 40! And my boobs really really hurt. )

NewMrsX · 10/03/2015 19:00

Hi op, I'm in the same boat although I didn't lose my tube last time.

I'm 5 weeks tomorrow and I'm booked in for an early scan at the epu for 6 weeks. The past week has dragged and I can't think of anything else.

Hope you get good news

TerrysNo3 · 10/03/2015 21:20

good luck Rosie and newmrsx I had an ectopic last July and am now 14 weeks pregnant. I was offered a scan at 6 weeks which showed a lovely teeny heartbeat in the right place.

Good luck to you both! Smile

mrstothemr · 11/03/2015 08:42

Good luck for today Rosie, as a pp said you're odds are good Smile

I had an ectopic just after Christmas, am pregnant again and have my early scan tomorrow at 5+5 so I feel for you. I keep thinking that symptoms are a good thing

mrstothemr · 11/03/2015 08:43

Rosieliveson · 11/03/2015 12:18

Thank you Rosie, just got back and all looks as it should - am so relieved.

They've booked us in for another scan in two weeks to check it's still doing what it's meant to, but this first one alone feels like a huge triumph. Phew x

Rosieliveson · 12/03/2015 16:06

That's great news. Congratulations

Congratulations Rosie, fantastic news!
I had an ectopic last March, it was my second baby. I already have one DD. I had severe pains and was rushed into emergency surgery, turned out it had ruptured and damaged my womb and tube in the process. Was told I was lucky to be alive.

Thought I would find it difficult to conceive but here I am, 34 weeks pregnant and larger than life! I have been told I can't deliver naturally because of the damage the ectopic did to my womb, but I am grateful to be here and to be able to carry another child.

Good luck with your pregnancy and everything will be fine xx

AD1986 · 22/05/2020 16:12

Hi all

I had an ectopic jan 2020 and found out im pregnant again this month.

Although im getting same pain as ectopic, they cant scan me just yet, but did anyone else experience this?

Thanks in advance xx

Lorellia · 22/05/2020 18:18

Hi Ad1986

I’m really sorry for your previous loss and the worry you are experiencing at this time.

I’m in a similar position and can empathise - ectopic which was expectantly managed last year and found out I’m pregnant yesterday.

The symptoms of mild transient pain particularly in the side of my previous ectopic and rectal pressure started today. As did the anxiety. I have a scan on 5th June but plan to phone epu in the morning to see about blood tests.

I’m hoping this works out for both of us. I read somewhere else on mumsnet someone who was in this position and it was a happy ending!

Take care and keep posting
Xxx
