As the title says, I've had a bit of a shocking evening, literally!!

Went to blow dry my hair and unfortunately for some reason the cord right next to the handle appears to have frayed - cue sparks flying everywhere from the end of the hair dryer and my hand being involuntarily clamped around said exposed cables and the shock going all up my whole arm and into my shoulders, chest and neck area until I managed to kick the plug off switch!

OH came running to help straight away, popped my hand and wrist under a cold tap for 5 minutes and just a small burn mark now over my palm. My wrist and elbow ache, but doesn't extend to my shoulder.

I called the hospital antenatal department for advice, currently 20wks with twins and they just said they'd never had this happen before! But as I feel ok with no breathing or heart pains and I already have my anomaly scan scheduled for tomorrow they'll just check everything out then...

Obviously I'm a bit worried to say the least! Due to an anterior placenta I haven't been feeling movements to tell me all's good - anyone else managed such a shocker of an evening? Anything I should really be watching out for?

I'd want checking out tonight.

Bex174 · 23/02/2015 22:16

I know, my thoughts too! I had said to them could they not just check me out tonight for peace of mind, but apparently they have no ultrasonographer there at the moment, so the first chance they'd have to scan and check everything is tomorrow morning, when I have a scan booked anyway.

I don't have any pains around my abdomen so I'm just consoling myself with that at the moment.

Such a freak accident that I can't believe it's just happened!

Surely you could be taken in for hr monitoring even if they can't scan you?

Are you feeling movement yet?

Newcy · 24/02/2015 06:00

I managed to give myself a shock on a blender at 13 weeks and was instructed by the midwife to go to a&e so they could check both mine and the baby's heart beat! All was completely fine and good luck with your scan! Smile

A&E

Thumbwitch · 24/02/2015 06:24

God, they could have at least run the doppler over your belly to check for heartbeats!

Thumbwitch · 24/02/2015 06:27

Sorry, pressed enter too soon - they should and could have done the doppler. When my Mum died when I was 20w pg, DS1 stopped moving for a couple of days (well I couldn't feel him anyway) - I went into the Antenatal clinic and explained, and within 10 minutes they had me into a room with a doppler just to check for heartbeat! That's all I needed for reassurance, and I expect that's all you need for now as well! But yes to having the scan afterwards as well, just to be on the safe side.

Bex, I did something similar when not pregnancy rang nhs direct and they wanted to send an ambulance. I only rang nhs direct because the burn was so sore. They made me go to a and e and have an ECG. I was fine but go to a and e if needed.

Bless you, what a scary experience. I hope your scan goes well today. Our hosp won't scan or listen to heartbeats before 24 weeks it's awful. I've got a Doppler and although it's caused me stress in the early days, when I didn't feel my ds moving for 2 days (only 18 weeks so no pattern yet) and hosp wouldn't see me, it did reassure me he was ok. Good luck for today x

blackwidow74 · 24/02/2015 13:57

Go to a&e ... They will hook you up to trace to check babies heart rates ... you need to be checked out too!!!!

Bex174 · 24/02/2015 21:49

Thanks for all your replies guys, really appreciated :)

Other half took me to A&E late last night as my whole arm started tingling and aching pretty severely. They put me on an ECG and said I was fine, probably just muscle spams from the shock, but no check of little ones last night at all, it drove me insane to say the least!!

But I'm really happy to say I had my scan earlier and the twins are absolutely fine, bouncing around as if nothing had happened at all, phew... They certainly are hardy little things!
