I'm 6+3 weeks, and I have my first midwife apt a week today. She said the appt takes around 40-60 mins, but I forgot to ask whether I need to take anything with me. Any advice or things to note down/take with me in preparation?
TIA

Find out from family if there are any health problems beforehand. Try decide if you want downs screening beforehand as we had to sign ours at first appointment and take a water sample Smile good luck

Gosh, you are lucky to get seen so early! Round here its around 12 weeks!

Take with all your current medications in their original packaging.

They will test your urine and take blood, and ask lots of questions! If there is any family history on you or the baby's father's side of medical problems like diabetes, heart problems, sickle cell or thalassaemia they will want to know. Sometimes they weigh and measure you, though I've been to 4 "first appointments" and not been. Useful if you already know the info though. They'll take your blood pressure. They'll also ask about domestic violence and FGM. They ask every one, and in my area FGM includes cosmetic vulval surgery and piercings.

Beyond that there is not normally any examination. In the old days they would do a pelvic exam, but I've never had one in this context.

When I was asked about both mine and dh family history the question they asked was 'have they had it from birth or as they got older?' It may just be the way of my mw but its definitely worth finding out just in case. Good luck OP

Booking appointments usually just involve a lot of form filling, no blood or urine required.

No one mentioned a urine sample to me so don't go for a wee before!

Rebecca1608 · 23/02/2015 17:50

I didn't get bloods taken on my first mw appointment. I did do a urine sample though. Like the other person said she'll ask about diabetes, heart problems etc on your side, your OHs side Of the family. I was weighed and measured, bmi was calculated and blood pressure was taken. Domestic violence was talked about. A lot of it was just her, ticking boxes in my notes to say she'd discussed everything. This probably will be your longest appointment. She had a feel of my tummy (I was further along in my pregnancy at my first appointment- and had, had some problems)

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies. I guess it is early to be seen (7 weeks+3, I live in North Wales) but she did say on the phone that they are chock-a-block for weeks and she's had to just squeeze me in as close to the normal time as possible! I will find out about illnesses/conditions on both sides this week, and will make sure I need a wee when I go! Thanks all :)

I'm also in north Wales so I'm sure your appt will be similar to mine. Good luck and enjoy :)
