20 week scan - scared of bad news

Littlepig8834 · 23/02/2015 12:29

I have my 20 week scan tomorrow and I am really worried, I don't look pregnant, hardly any symptoms and I am convinced that at the scan tomorrow we will receive bad news.

I will admit that my waist looks thicker, but that is about it, I wasn't overly slim to begin with (size 14, 5ft 10) so I know I might not show as soon as those slimmer would, but at 5 months I thought there would be something.

Looking at the posts on here, I see that all pregnancies are different and that calms me a little, but then I think about my lack of bump and no increase in boob size, no symptoms as such and start to worry again.

I did feel slightly nauseous at the beginning and the 12 week scan was fine, but since then there has been nothing. People keep asking where my bump is or if I have felt it move (I haven't, but as this is my first, I am not sure what to feel) and this makes me worry more.

Sorry to go on, but I just wanted to know if anyone else felt like this and I am not being overly paranoid or sensitive.

I worried constantly through my pregnancies so you're not alone.

Some symptoms subside after 12 weeks, i.e. nausea, tiredness.

Are you having regular appointments with your midwife? The regular sound check kept me (reasonably) sane.

If you are AT ALL worried call your midwife, get your baby checked by her, or at a and e department.

PerryNotCider · 23/02/2015 12:47

I didn't show until towards the end of my first pregnancy so don't worry too much about that. The midwife should listen to a heart beat at each appointment as well which should help reassure you.

I was always terrified for each scan and I did get news of a problem at 20 weeks, but I have a beautiful DS now. So even if they find something its not always as bad as you first think. I hope it goes well

I've got my "20 week" (actually 18+5) scan tomorrow, and I'm worried, too. I'm just an anxious person; I worry about getting bad news every time I got to the OBs. Here's hoping we both get nothing but good news!

AnythingNotEverything · 23/02/2015 13:32

That 12-20week period is awful. No sign of anything good or bad unless you're lucky and get identifiable movement.

The chances are everything is fine. Try not to worry.

Hellohellohowareyou · 23/02/2015 13:33

I'm 22 weeks tomorrow with my second DC and not really showing yet. My 20 week scan was fine and baby measured correctly plus I'm getting lots of movement so I really wouldn't worry Smile

theonewiththenoisychild · 23/02/2015 13:34

i always find i dont enjoy my 20 week scan. the sonographer asked me to let her take a good look and then she would talk to me but she needs to concentrate as this scan is where they are "looking for trouble" i thought.... thats it you have hit the nail on the head thats exactly why i have never enjoyed a 20 week scan

theonewiththenoisychild · 23/02/2015 13:36

and im 35 weeks now and im still always worried. i have been very anxious this pregnancy. he is my third baby and he was a twin but is now a singleton Sad

Roseotto · 23/02/2015 13:43

Little pig, your worries are normal. I felt just the same at this point and this is my fourth baby! It is totally normal for taller women not to show as well - there is more room inside your longer frame to keep a small baby tucked in than us shorties. (Look at Kate Middleton and she is thin as anything and barely showed at 6 months). I am sure all will be well. It is very tough when you can't feel movements (an anterior placenta can cushion the softer kicks as well). It is overwhelmingly likely that all will be well and you will start to feel the baby after that. Good luck.

Littlepig8834 · 23/02/2015 13:53

Thanks all, I keep telling myself not to be worried, but I guess it is normal. I sort of heard the heartbeat at 16 weeks, but apparently the little bean was hard to pin down so the midwife had trouble locating him/her!

There are times when you just need that extra reassurance that you are not being over paranoid and silly!

GeekyMommy - good luck for your scan tomorrow, as you say let's hope we both get good news!

Littlepig8834 - I'm in the exact situation however my scan is another 2 weeks away! I'm so worried as I feel so normal. Like you I keep reading reassuring posts yet I never seem to be satisfied. I wont settle until I have my scan.
I hope it all goes well for you tomorrow - let me know how you get on.

xx

Lop12345 · 23/02/2015 14:04

I was just the same before my 20week scan too, no symptoms only sore boobs for a few weeks & wasn't really showing either, but all was fine, try not to worry, I know easier said then done! I still don't have a huge bump now & I'm 26 weeks, everyone is different. Good luck Smile

geekymommy · 23/02/2015 14:10

It's normal to not feel movement this early in your first pregnancy. You may feel movement late if the placenta is in the front- mine was when I was pregnant with DD. The placenta being in the front (called "anterior placenta") isn't a problem for you or the baby, but it does make it harder to feel movement. Or maybe, based on DD, it somehow makes the baby more stubborn when he or she becomes a toddler.

I sometimes feel movement now (my placenta is in back this time), but generally only when I'm sitting in certain positions. And, of course, when you're worried and really want to feel something for some reassurance, the baby isn't going to cooperate...

Caterina99 · 23/02/2015 14:10

At 20 weeks I had almost zero symptoms and barely any bump and felt no movement. I'm 5'5 and a 12. All was fine and I'm now 23 weeks and definitely feeling movement and to me there is a significant bump, but it could easily be hidden under loose clothes.

Littlepig8834 · 24/02/2015 14:25

Had my scan earlier and I am pleased to say that everything is ok. He/she were a bit of a mover, so I am sure I will feeling something sooner rather than later.

I was very nervous beforehand, but the sonographer was great (we had a student sonographer too) and they helped explain what can be seen and talked through what they are looking for/at.

Thank you for all your reassurances, it did help calm me down a little.
