you wouldn't think I've done it twice before - can't remember a thing! there's a poster at my gp saying tell your doctor as soon as you're pregnant. Is there any point doing so? Shall I wait a few weeks - any advantages to doing so? Have started taking folic acid. stopped drinking (which I barely do anyway), don't like soft cheese and pate. Anything else I need to do or worry about?

Once you let your gp surgery know you can get referred for your booking in appointment and Scan. Near my the quicker the better as appointments are like gold dust!
Congratulations

Thank you! But I can also self refer to my hospital of choice online. Any disadvantage to doing so?

No idea sorry, that's not an option for me so not something I've thought about

Cornberry · 20/02/2015 23:45

I had to get my maternity exemption form through my GP. Agree the sooner the better as demand for appointments is high x

DrCoconut · 21/02/2015 01:11

Here you ring the midwives directly. No need to see a GP.

catsofa · 21/02/2015 01:22

Here the midwives work out of my GP surgery, so you call the surgery and they make you a booking in appointment with a midwife.

Would be worth re-reading the NHS guidance on what to eat etc, there will probably have been at least minor changes since your last time www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx e.g. you can now eat peanuts if there's no family history of nut allergy.

Not much else you need to do until your booking in appointment, other than maybe do a little dance and cut your own toenails while you still can.

Congratulations!

You need to be taking Vitamin D too. And there are other food restrictions, you can read them on NHS

What's the advantage of not telling the doctor straight away though?

I agree with others - the booking in appointments with the midwife here are like gold dust. The sooner you let the Drs know, the sooner you'll be on that waiting list. I was 10+5 before I had my booking in appointment, which led to a delay with getting my consultant appointment, my 12 week scan appointment etc.....and I had told the Drs I was pregnant at 4+2 weeks! So if I was you, I'd give them a ring to let them know :)
