hello ladies,
im after a bit of advice really,
As i understand the concept of count the kicks, i have been told that it usually starts around 24 weeks as before this there is nothing that can be done, if movements are reduced,
so, im 21 + 5 and although i have felt baby moving throughout the, it has not been as active as normal, i read somewhere that babies at this age spend 14-16 hours sleeping, so maybe hes just having a quiet day?
or maybe hes gotten himself into a position where i can feel him as much?

Any advice or opinions would be great, many thanks :)

Count the Kicks usually starts toafter from 28/30 weeks once baby is in a proper routine ... also until this point baby is too small to monitor on the machine as they have so much room to move about it make a trace impossible. By 30 weeks there will be a fairly regular pattern of wake/sleep ... try not to worry until then :)

P's I'm 31 weeks and my little one has frequently turned into the placenta which is anterior and I feel nothing ... been on the trace twice now and both times it shows her breakdancing away happily and I haven't felt a flutter lol ... !!

Hi Pickle, I'm also 21+5 (well 21+6 now) and have been wondering the same due to reduced movement (or movements I've not noticed but then there isn't a pattern yet) in the last few days (which I'm putting down to my anterior placenta). You start counting kicks from the third trimester, so what Blackwidow said basically. Smile

The midwife told me that they are still tiny at that point and can hide away. When she was listening to the heartbeat when I was 24 weeks the baby kept squirreling away from the doppler and we could hear quite a few movements that I couldn't feel which I found strange as she is right up front and can feel and see her usually :)

Thank you ladies,
feeling alot better now :) x

I've been told by several midwives not to bother, but if it reassures me, count the kicks.
I have an anterior placenta too which can cushion bubs movements, but i feel the majority of his movements anyway. Ive been monitored twice just because he likes to hide and scare me! But he's a little martial artist, 70 movements per hour on average ha.
There is no point in trying to count kicks until after 26weeks, but any movement you do feel just make a note if it eases your mind.
I felt movemet from 13 weeks/braxton hicks from 15 weeks and im now 33&4 days and had enough xD

I came on to start a similar thread. I know "Count the Kicks" is a worthy campaign, and can save lives, but it can also make you completely paranoid! Especially the bit where it says that too much activity can also be a bad sign too Hmm.

I'm 26 weeks tomorrow- a few days ago I was worried because I was feeling comparatively little movement, now I'm worrying because over the last 24 hours the baby seems to have gone wild! Should I be worried??

blackwidow74 · 21/02/2015 12:15

Stubbornstains don't panic yourself ... I think the increased movement is in last few weeks when baby should be slowing down. My little one scared the bejeebus out of me the other night as she was violently thrashing when she normally squirms ... turns out she was just flipping round ... at 26/28 weeks a growth spurt can make you feel more ... It may be that your little one found an optimum position where every kick connected with your abdominal wall seeming as though movement increased but in actual fact you just wouldn't have felt all those kicks :)

stubbornstains · 21/02/2015 12:31

Aw...thanks for the reassurance *blackwidow"! I thought I was being silly, but there's always that nagging little worry, isn't there?

I did notice at my 20 week scan that the baby was making lots of movements, and that I couldn't feel them....half way through he flipped completely over, and then I could suddenly feel them! Grin

By the way, is 74 your birth year? If so, you're the same vintage as me, and you're welcome to come and join us on our ante natal thread for the riper fertility goddesses :www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_clubs/2214896-Old-bird-graduates-gather-round-lets-talk-chicklets?

If you go on the count the kicks website there's a "timeline" type page for what to expect when. Smile Sorry can't link- on phone.

Hi Pickle, my midwife and midwives at the hospital have said to look for your baby's own routine rather than literally count the number of kicks.
One of the midwives said to me that there has been a lot of confusion with the Count The Kicks as to what would actually be counted as a 'kick'.
I'm currently nearly 32 weeks and have panicked twice now myself about reduced movements, where I have called the midwife. Thankfully both times have been fine and I was told that baby could be sleeping, or in a different position with back towards my stomach and limbs facing onwards, or the placenta cushioning movements.
Always call the midwife if you are unsure they will be more than willing to see you!
Also the first time I called, they told me to drink an ice cold glass of water in one go (not just taking sips) and lie flat on your back to try and feel movement, and then move onto your left side.
Hope all is ok! x

Ladies, it's worthwhile not focussing on weeks, but on what's normal or not for you.

Our DS was delivered by emcs at 27+2 after I went in with reduced movement. He was almost dead, and if I hadn't been aware of what was normal for him, would certainly have died.

If you're unsure, get it checked out.

pinkie1982 · 21/02/2015 16:24

Hi. My midwife wants me to start recording routines from 23w instead of actually counting

Zachmeister · 21/02/2015 16:55

I'm in Scotland and there has been a move away from count the kicks campaign to recommendation of knowing and monitoring your own baby's pattern, if it feels different to you then speak to your midwife. Again, this is from 24 weeks onwards.
