What are the chances of a second late MMC?

Hi all

I had a MMC identified at anomaly scan at 21 weeks in July. Docs think baby died around 15 weeks. Obviously an awful time.

I am now 19 weeks pregnant again. Scan is next Friday and I am terrified its going to happen again.

Does anyone know the stats around a second late MMC?

I have had scans at 7, 14 and 16 weeks, all fine.

It just can't happen again can it? Surely not??

Thanks
Hx

Aww I am so so sorry for your loss that must have been awful! I do not know the official stats but I have heard it is very rare to have two MMC in a row. I had one in June last year and am not 26 weeks pregnant with a very active healthy baby. So it can all work out ok! I have my fingers crossed for you, I know it is very very scary!!

Well, it could theoretically, but its very very very unlikely at that stage. I've had a few mmc, but none later than 13 weeks, and even that was unusual I was told at the hospital. I am 12 weeks now so I know how worried you are, its so hard not to be, but you have to think positively.

Good luck.

That is absolutely awful Helga, was there any indication that anything was wrong or was it progressing as a normal pregnancy?

So so sorry, and I can totally imagine how much of a worry it must be this time around.

But rest assured the chances of it happening are very rare if there was not a specific reason for it happening last time - i.e. genetic issue etc.

I hope that the hospital are looking after you, and please do consult your midwife immediately if you have any concerns or just want a quick heartbeat check, they really will understand.

I don't know the exact chances either except to say it's v v unlikely.

But having suffered from MMC previously, it is completely normal to worry about it in future pregnancies.

I'm currently 39+3 and any time the baby's movements slow down or stop, I get totally paranoid. All I can do is try not to let it take over (and prod the baby to get him moving again!).

It will get slightly easier for you as your pregnancy progresses and you can feel movements. Scans only ever helped put my mind at ease for a very short time.

I truly wish you well. The odds are on your side, but it is a difficult time. Try not to worry excessively, if you can.

Thanks all, very reassuring.

They couldn't find anything wrong with the baby in July, so there is nothing we have to worry about as such.

I keep thinking I can feel movements, but I thought that last time and the docs said I could have felt the weight if the baby 'clunking' about. Shudder!

Fingers crossed for next Friday.

What tactless docs to use such clumsy language in such a difficult situation.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for next Friday for you. x
