Moses baskets

I need to get a Moses basket for our bedroom, we've already got a cot bed for the nursery, but there seems to be such a massive difference in price!

Some seem to be approx £35, some at £50 and then so e at approx £100! Is a Moses basket one of those things where it's worth splashing out on? I didn't mind splashing on the bed and matress as I can see how it's going to get used for so long but for something that will last just a few months, why is there such a difference in price?

100 quid, what!? Don't spend that much your baby will only be in it a few months. They are quite portable and nice though but not worth splashing out on. Try the supermarkets e.g. Asda for cheap ones

Whatabout · 15/02/2015 20:02

Get a cheap one, they aren't used for long

ILiveOnABuildsite · 15/02/2015 20:04

We had a cheaply one for dd, if was perfect. Used it for 5.5 months until she outgrew it. Just bought another cheap one for ds due in April.

Chocolatecakefan · 15/02/2015 20:05

I just wanted to check as I wondered if the more expensive ones would be comfiest but that's a relief you think a cheaper one is ok

Total waste imo. Had one and hardly used it. Wish I'd had a co-sleeper cot. Will get one next time. Baby can nap in pram if down stairs.

Bondy83 · 15/02/2015 20:07

Borrow one off family or a friend if you can and just buy a new mattress for it (I got one £10 off amazon ). A moses basket isn't worth forking out a fortune on they're not in them 2 minutes

GoooRooo · 15/02/2015 21:52

Get a second hand one for peanuts and buy a new mattress. DS was only in his for about 2 months

NorthernChinchilla · 15/02/2015 22:00

DS completely refused to ever sleep in his, we used it to store his toys. This is very far from being unusual.
Definitely get a cheapie!

leanne963 · 15/02/2015 22:04

I got a second hand Mamas and Papas one for £30 with the stand, would have been over £120 brand new. I wouldn't buy an expensive one as the baby might not like it!

TerrysNo3 · 15/02/2015 22:05

Get a cheap one and splash out on a lovely blanket, that will last longer and be more noticeable/stand out more than the wicker anyway :)

Shil0846 · 15/02/2015 22:20

We had a £120 Emille et Rose Moses basket which looked lovely but DS outgrew it in 4 months.

Looking back it was a waste of money, I wish I'd bought a crib instead.

sleepybee · 15/02/2015 22:35

I love the Moba Moses baskets rather than the wicker type but reluctant to pay that much. I've looked at bedside sleepers but again those are pricey too & still only meant to last same amount of time. There's so many choices Confused

PurpleCorsage · 15/02/2015 22:37

I spent about £120 on a Moses basket and she slept in it for less than a week!!

PacificDogwood · 15/02/2015 22:39

I borrowed one from a friend and the only time DS1 was in it was to take a photograph Grin
Never used it again for him, and did not bother with one for the other 3.

middlings · 15/02/2015 22:41

I did use them for both of mine (although less for DD2 as sleeping on me was preferable to anywhere else). We got the £35 one from John Lewis and it was absolutely fine

Jenny1231990 · 15/02/2015 23:04

I did spend a little more on mine, a lovely dark wicker and cream one, with a nice stand. People said I was silly but that was 6years ago now, still going strong. My son used it, my niece used it and my little girl was in there until she was 7months old, I'm expecting number 3 and will use again. So to me it's been worth having the one I liked and I just bought a new mattress.
I'm guessing well looked after this could be done what ever the price though.
Xxx

AnythingNotEverything · 15/02/2015 23:11

Get one second hand and replace the mattress, or go straight for a crib. Lots of babies don't last until 6 months in a moses basket and if you want to keep baby in with you until then, but can't fit the cotbed in your bedroom, you may have a problem.

Baby can use the pram downstairs.

catnip85 · 16/02/2015 08:03

I got a really nice wicker one from john Lewis for £35. Good quality and its not too frilly or fancy. Worth having a look on their website

Asda sell moses baskets for 25 quid if you want a new one. But i would consider a second hand one as previously suggested. And definitely don't buy a new stand. No point at all.

ZenNudist · 16/02/2015 08:43

I did find them useful for both my dc. DS1 slept in it night and day and I just carried it upstairs and down. DS2 I bought a bedside crib but he still slept in the Moses basket downstairs. I reckon I got five or six months the second time.

Yy to getting secondhand or cheap. I paid 45 quid including stand and mattress from a baby fair.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 16/02/2015 08:58

I got one from a Mamas and Papas outlet, reduced from £100 to £30! Also borrowed a cheap one from a friend and couldn't see any difference in quality. The £30 was definitely worth it for us as DD was in it til 8 months, she was far too big for it by the end but she loved the cosiness/security of it and absolutely hated her cot!

PurpleCorsage · 16/02/2015 09:16

I would just get a crib.

My DH has a family crib, that he and all his cousins and his brother slept in, and now our DD's and their cousins are doing the same (after the rejection of the Moses basket!)... And they're less that £100 in mothercare and my DD1 slept in it for 13 months, DD2 for 8.

theonewiththenoisychild · 16/02/2015 09:48

they arnt in them long. im on my 3rd baby i had a second hand one for dd and brought a new mattress for it and then for ds my mum brought me a new one from a baby boutique with a stand as i had given dd's away and ive still got it so when my little womb squatter arrives next month he will be using it. covers have washed up lovely and have brought a new mattress for it

Lunastarfish · 16/02/2015 15:36

I need a moses basket for the bedrom as the cot is too big to fit in our room. luckily my sister has lent me hers but if she wasn't able to i'd get one off freecycle (they are often offfered) or ebay. I can't really see the point of splashing out on an item which won't be used long unlike say a pushchair/cot/carseat.
