Stop your abdominal muscles splitting during pregnancy????

It happened to me during my last pregnancy, wasn't a prob while preg. After i gave birth was a different story. I felt like a puppet with no string. I couldn't stand up straight and foud things in general really difficult

I'd love to know the answer to that

Have you tried doing the ab-strengthening muscles they recommend or pilates?

One thing my midwife told me to do was ensure that you are getting in and out of bed properly especially when you're near the end. You should always roll on to your side and then hoist your legs over to put your full weight on them when you get out. I used to just sit up and then get out and this started making my muscles seperate. Also make sure your lifting things correctly and not doing too much.

p.s. not sure who 'they' are - I mean the ones where you get on all fours and pull your abs in for a few seconds at a time.

It's impossible. They need to separate in order to accommodate your expanding uterus. The key to helping them is two-fold: firstly do not over-exert them, neither during pg as they separate, nor afterwards as they return together; secondly, although you can continue doing abdominal exercises during the first trimester, once they start to separate you must not do any 'upwards' crunches, but can continue doing 'sidways' and oblique crunches, as long as your shoulders barely leave the floor or cushion. If you over-exert your abdominals, they will not return fully. OTOH, if you keep your obliques gently exercised you will find the bump easier to carry and yourself more stable afterwards. I didn't work on my obliques this time, and boy am I feeling it!
