Staying longer in hospital - advice needed

Can anyone let me know if you can ask to stay an extra night at the hospital. At my local maternity unit they boot you out after 1 night after a non "complicated" birth, we don't mind paying if necessary can anyone advise on cost or if we can just tell them we are not ready and insist...?

Thanks for your response mygirl - I just don't feel that 1 night is going to be enough for me for all sorts of reasons, I just hope they are flexable....

Insist, tell them you're not ready. Are you planning to breastfeed, if so I think its important to stay until its established and am shocked that a hospital would boot people out afetr 1 night.

lulumama · 22/10/2006 20:44

i know plenty of women who have asked to stay longer for various reasons

including a night away from the other children!!

why not discuss with the midwife at your next appointment....

HumphreyComfrey · 22/10/2006 20:45

When I had my children I had the option of paying for a private room, and staying as long as I wanted - within reason!

I think it was about £25 per night.

Might be worth asking your midwife.

Thanks guys I have my tour in a couple of weeks and will ask the MWs there - and I think you are right binka I will insist, just sounds far too soon to me.

When I had my lo 2 yrs ago, I was told I could leave the next day but chose to stay a bit longer as I felt I needed that time to recover a bit longer and prepare myself a bit more especially when it came to breastfeeding. I would chat to your midwife and mention it to the unit when you are on tour. I would be really surprised if they insisted you left the next day if you weren't feeling ready. Is this your first?

When I had Dd1 I transfered the next day to a Midwife run unit in my home town and there was no pressure to leave there

lubella · 22/10/2006 22:35

yes it is my first count, the MW at the ante natal classes I have had (both NCT and NHS) have said "yes we normally discharge you after 1 night" after I expressed surprise at that they didn't follow it up or say we actually had a choice if we didn't feel ready....

when I had my dd1 I was asked by the midwife at an appointment how long I intended to stay in the hospital, I said about 4 days but I'd see how it went. in the end I stayed in for 5 days but I wasn't going anywhere until I knew what I was doing with this tiny baby with her being my first.

with dd2 I stayed in one night and went home the next day but the birth had been more straightforward and I was happy to go home as I knew what I was doing second time around.

Tommy · 22/10/2006 22:45

don't remember being told to go home either time!

I moved to a small (4 bed) maternty unit after giving birth in a very big and busy hospital - lovely
I think I stayed one night in hopsital and 2 nights in the unit both times

QuootieSpookypie · 22/10/2006 22:45

I got told we can stay as long as we liked, that we wouldnt get booted home if we weren't ready!

PrettyCandles · 22/10/2006 22:51

After dd was born they offered to discharge me after a few hours, but I wanted to stay in for a while. I explained (and it was in my notes) that I had had PND after ds1, and this was considered a good enough reason for me to stay in. I had one night on the ward, and then, as I had requested a single room if one came available, two nights in a single. Obviously we paid for the single. IIRC it was about £100 for a room with private en suite. Expensive but worth every penny to have some private bonding time with dd and not be stressed about things at home.

i think you can stay for as long as you reasonably want.

The only thing i would bear in mind is that your DH/P friends and family generally can not stay past 9pm or in some hospitals 8pm.

lubella · 23/10/2006 11:19

Thanks for all your responses girls - I am much more confident now they cannot boot me out after one night but will ask on the tour anyway...

Personally I'd get out as son as possible, home is muhc more comfy and relaxing than in hospital. Hospitals are always noisy and I worry about how clean they are too, at least at home they are your own germs. With my first I was home the next morning bubt dd had to stay in scbu but with ds we both came home 8 hours after the birth, couldn't wai to get home! This time I hope for us both to be home within a few hours but it depends how early I am and how it goes
