DH with Chicken pox and 20 wk scan

Hello

DH is in the middle of a case of chicken pox, spots started on Saturday and no new ones since yesterday.
I've just had a sudden realisation that he may not be able to come to my 20 wk scan which is next Monday.

Or do you think he will be ok by then as they will be all scabbed over?
I will give the scanning dept a call tomorrow but just wondered if anyone has experienced this.
Obviously I want him there but at the same time wouldn't want to expose him to pregnant ladies and others who may not have had it

I would phone dept, but I don't think it's a wise idea for him to go, sorry.

If he looks even a bit scabby, even if he is not actually infectious, you will make the other women waiting there very nervous. Could you maybe try and push the scan back a week?

museumum · 10/02/2015 19:30

16 days after first spots he is unlikely to be infectious. And if he doesn't get any new spots now and they all scab quickly then he definitely won't be.
However if there's no medical issue for you or the baby with delaying the scan a week then I would.

If the spots have scabbed over by then, then he will no longer be infectious. Normally takes 5-7 days

I don't really want to push the scan back as I will be 20+6 as it is and I know the unit it ridiculously busy already. I will see what they say as I can always get someone else to come with me in his place.
I would be a bit Hmm if I was sat next to someone with all those spots so can totally understand that aspect

We let children back to nursery once their spots have scabbed over as then it's not infectious. But see what the hospital say.

museumum · 10/02/2015 20:02

Also if I were him I wouldn't sit down and certainly not next to a pregnant woman. I'd loiter by reception not touching any surfaces or breathing on anyone :)

Ds has just had chickenpox, once stabbed over and 5 days after first spots appeared he is no longer infectious. If I were him I'd wear a long sleeved top & lurk away from others whilst waiting to go in.

I agree with the others he should no longer be contagious by then but I think you should call the centre and tell them. They may have their own guidelines about exposing pregnant women to c pox and even if your H covers up, he will still be touching things like his chair in the scan room etc which somebody else will then touch. Sounds OCD to think like that but that is the nhs way of managing infection and they won't want any risk of a whole days clinic getting the pox if there is any possibility.
Really hope they are ok with it though because it is such an important scan for him to miss

Thanks for the replies. All his spots have now scabbed over abut I'm going to wait until Monday and see what's he is like then. I will give them a call and explain the situation. I already have my mum on back up if he can't come x
