I know that we aren't meant to eat cold cut lunch meat kinda stuff (I'm sure I read that somewhere) but what about the Quorn equivalent? only asking cos I saw it contained egg so I wasn't sure... what's the general consensus?

I am veggie and have eaten Quorn products throughout my pregnancy with any ill effects (so far!) Didn't even cross mind to think about it!

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 10/02/2015 18:53

You can eat quorn.

You can eat cold cut meats like ham.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 10/02/2015 18:53

Actually, you can eat anything. But you know what I mean. Smile

Eggs are fine... Confused they are all vaccinated against salmonella in the UK.

I'm sure it's Australia that advises against eating cod cuts of meat, like chicken.

Cured sausages are mentioned on the NHS website on the 'avoid' list.

I knew I could rely on mumsnetters for sound advice Smile thank you!

The US also advises against cold cuts of meat. They advise against raw or undercooked eggs, but not eggs in general.

I wouldn't worry too much about another country's recommendations in general. Eggs are handled differently here (we have to refrigerate them). Food safety rules are different in different countries, and the pregnancy food recommendations probably reflect that.

MissTwister · 10/02/2015 22:06

I have been trying to avoid cold cuts but seriously what can you actually have in a sandwich from places like Pret if not chicken, ham, bacon etc. And of course no brie. All that's left is cheddar.....and egg

geekymommy · 11/02/2015 13:40

Try doing it when you keep kosher (no ham or bacon, obviously, and no chicken unless it's kosher chicken, which most chicken sold in restaurants and supermarkets isn't) and are avoiding tuna because of mercury. Oh, and I don't like egg salad. I've pretty much avoided cold sandwiches during my pregnancies, except for ones DH or I make at home.

(Of course, I think the nearest Pret to me is in Washington, DC, about a 5 hour drive away, so I'm not getting sandwiches there anyway)

MissTwister · 11/02/2015 22:12

Yeah Pret's definitely not worth a 5 hour drive......what do you eat for work lunches if not sandwiches?

geekymommy · 11/02/2015 22:16

We have a burrito place and a pizza place in or near the building where I work. There's an Indian takeaway a few blocks away that I sometimes go to. Sometimes I pack a lunch.

Do any of you ladies know whether Quorn has an affect of fertility. I am a veggie and eat a fair bit of the stuff. We have been ttc for 8 months with no joy. Have not been able to find any sensible info on the matter.

thesmallbear · 23/03/2015 08:18

Hi iwantcandi, I'm veggie and eat loads of Quorn. Conceived the first time after 3 months (that pregnancy ended in a MMC, sadly). The second pregnancy was conceived in two month. So the Quorn certainly didn't do me any harm. 25 weeks now and all is well. Good luck!

WorryWurta · 23/03/2015 08:32

Quorn doesn't have any effect on fertility, soy/tofu might if you have large quantities because it has chemicals occurring naturally that can mimic estrogen and throw your hormones off.

iwantcandi · 23/03/2015 09:15

Thanks very much for advice. That's a relief as would have to totally restock the fridge Wink

Carrierpenguin · 23/03/2015 09:21

Quorn won't affect your fertility, nor will soya, that's what I was told by fertility consultants whilst I did ivf and I got pregnant whilst still eating it too! Good luck!

Namechange2point0 · 23/03/2015 12:19

The only meats you can't have are cured and they advise against meats from a deli counter.

You can have cold meats eg ham turkey chicken.

Quorns also fine - it's sou free isn't it?

Namechange2point0 · 23/03/2015 12:19

*soy

thesmallbear · 23/03/2015 12:20

Quorn is a fungus, so yes it's soy free.

WorryWurta · 23/03/2015 12:24

I wouldn't worry so much about what you eat tbh, I remember 8 months feels like forever but sometimes it does take a while. We did 3 years, failed ivf, didn't drink alcohol & caffeine the whole time, even switched to meat for a few months on an acupuncturist's advice. Cheesy but it was a couple months after I said f**k it and went back on the booze and caffeine that I got pg naturally. Very best of luck to you! Penguin's probs right about the soy- it was something I read a lot when ttc but I thought after i posted shouldn't have added to the worry!

iwantcandi · 23/03/2015 23:38

Thanks so much WorryW! getting quite tense about everything and over-analyticalConfused
Will prob soon end up binge drinking and eating everything I know I shouldn't!!

scarednoob · 24/03/2015 11:40

i did quite a lot of googling about quorn, being a massive over-reactor and panicker to everything!

the only thing i read that sounded a note of caution related to cooked quorn - a fair few people said that it's fine to cook and eat or to cook and freeze, but they wouldn't eat it if it has been cooked and sitting around for more than about 24 hours. not sure if this is legit or totally bogus, but for the cost of half a portion of quorn, i've stuck to it.

making quorn shepherds pie tonight with spicy mexicana cheese topping, as it happens... not sure any of that will survive to sit around anyway.........!
