Bump Inferiority

Am 16w pg and my bump is developing nicely. I love it and so does dp. Thing is, whenever I see a pg person with a bigger bump, as well as feeling the same admiration I have always felt when I see a pg woman, I also now feel a bit "less than" and a bit of a fraud in my own mat. clothes, which of course, I don't fill yet (even though I can't fit into my old ones).

Please don't laugh - does anyone else know what I am talking about, or am I just a bit mad (in a nice way!)

YES!!!!!! SO know beansprout, I wanted to smile conspiritorially at the nicely rounded 6/7 months bumped lady on the train, but she wouldn't have known I was in the same club.

Our time will come, sweetheart. And in the summer we'll get lots of well intentioned 'Oh, if I'm feeling bad in this heat, you must be feeling awful's.

Zerub · 22/04/2004 18:44

I used to feel that way - at 9 months I looked about 6 months. But remember that those with huge bumps are all looking at you, jealously wishing they were that small.

Although it is nice when you finally stop looking fat and start looking definitely pregnant.

hana · 22/04/2004 18:45

I remember wearing materinity clothes around 25 weeks or so even though I didn't need to...just desperate to 'show' that I too, was part of the pregnancy club! NO doubt this time round I'll be needing them in a month or so instead...

coppertop · 22/04/2004 18:47

I belonged to the Enormous Bump Brigade both times and will admit to feeling extremely jealous of women with small neat bumps. I just loooked as though someone had strapped a beach ball to my front.

bossykate · 22/04/2004 18:48

make that a spacehopper strapped to my front. small neat bumps, boo!

beansprout · 22/04/2004 18:53

lol Toots!! That's EXACTLY the same for me!! Part of me want to congratulate/talk about all the minor details/ask loads of questions and the other part of me knows she only thinks "why is that woman staring at me?"

At the rate I am going though, I may well be joining the beach ball/space hopper club. Most nights I get undressed and dp says "bloody hell, you look SO pregnant!".

Gosh, I thought this was going to be 'an announcement' by motherinferior!

aloha · 22/04/2004 18:57

Oh, Beansprout, you are mad. I am so desperately envious of all the women with tiny bumps...and tiny bums...and tiny thighs. And 2 and a half years later I still am. Pregnancy did something absolutely terrible to my body. All my life I've been a size 10 or 12, and now I'm a size 14 to 16 and HATE IT. Any weight I lose bounces back in a day of eating like I used to and I feel doomed to be a fatty forever. Cherish your little bump!

Toots · 22/04/2004 20:13

double LOL Beansprout and Tinker. Pelt me with squished tomatoes if you like, but I think there's is something in the women are never satisfied adage.

By the way Beans, stop getting me into trouble on other threads for dissing Mothercare

hoxtonchick · 22/04/2004 20:18

so did i tinker!

My SIL and I were pregnant at the same time - 2 weeks apart. My DH was really proud of the fact that my bump was bigger than hers...sorry to brag but I was obviously like coppertop!

beansprout · 22/04/2004 20:29

But mothercare made me cry!! (There's a whole strand, right there!!)

with ds i put the weight on slowly, but it was everywhere...i was LARGE!! with dd i had a bump at 6 weeks (wtf?!) but it just looked horribly like puppy fat. i only grew there though and no-where else. Every pair of mat trousers i tried on had this huge ass that just sagged all over the place.

Levanna · 23/04/2004 00:58

My SIL was 'round the other evening. Smugly pointing out that her bump is twice the size of mine - she's 12 weeks.....and I'm 22! Yes it is, but then, so are her thighs, bum, etc.
Hmmmm, wonder which one of us will be more smug by the end of the year? !

nightowl · 23/04/2004 01:05

my friend was sooo big when pg with her only girl..we all stood around taking photos of her arse. Its a good job weve all known each other since primary school and she has a good sense of humour!

toddlerbob · 23/04/2004 01:16

I think I got jealous of people who were "more pregnant" than me rather than their bumps. I was jealous they were going to see their baby sooner. An old colleague's wife was due 8 weeks after me and had her baby before me, and I only just remembered to check the baby was okay before being jealous. I'm a bad woman. I also wore maternity clothes long before I needed to - but they were so comfy!

nightowl · 23/04/2004 01:21

my first pg i was in mat clothes asap and loved it...second time i was crowbarring myself into my size 12s for as long as poss!

sweetkitty · 23/04/2004 14:26

I'm so happy I have a bump now at 25 weeks I am finally beyond is it fat or a bump stage.

At the hospital last week there were loads of 16 year olds with tiny bumps and nothign else. I felt jealous of them cos I know it's going on everywhere.

beansprout · 23/04/2004 16:37

I don't think it is bump envy so much as just feeling a bit inadequate and not "properly" pregnant. A bit like how I felt when I started big school but was still only in the first year!!!
