Hi all,

Sorry for the TMI but over the last 3 days suddenly had a severe case of piles and it's making me miserable, really concerned about how it's going to effect the birth. I can't even sit down properly Sad

I'm not embarrassed to speak to a doctor or anything was just really keen to hear from other mumsnetters who may be going through the same thing/experienced it in the past? How did it effect the birth? Any great over the counter medicines?

Really starting to get me down so positive stories more than welcome!

You have my sympathy! I ended up in A&E at 35 weeks, mine were so painful, I was sobbing!

Went to my GP (after getting some anaesthetic bum gel from A&E- not OTC) and he prescribed Lactulose to keep things soft and Proctosedyl. It has cleared them right up. OTC stuff was completely useless, was beyond that and it sounds like you are too.

You poor thing.

I'm 24 weeks and have been suffering.

I went to boots and got the suppositories, cream and wipes and after using for 3 days it's definitely starting to clear up.

I hope you feel better soon. Smile

Hi Op I feel your pain ! I got a hurrendous one at 36 weeks . Went to the chemist as it was a weekend and got supposotories and external cream also some witchhazel ! It took a couple of days for pain to subside . Now it has almost gone I think thats as i am due to give birth Tue and baby has moved . There is hope ! I found the supposotories made going to the loo a hell of a lot easier and didnt irritate it . Take care x

Mine were also truly awful and ended in hospital for 3 days. They used ice packs in a pillowcase held in place with knickers. For the pain. It did work. Hubby went and got massive ice cube bags from the shops and we put them in a food bag then in the pillowcase it does help the pain while waiting for the cream/suppositories (anything else you can get your hands on lol) to work x

Awful here too. Had the suppositories plus cream which helped to calm them down but they didn't go and I had them right up to the birth. I was worried about how they'd affect things (or be made much worse) but to be honest when I was in labour I totally forgot about them and they didn't cause any additional pain or discomfort. I think. I mean, the pain of labour was distracting so I probably just didn't notice!

I did give them a thought when I was pushing but DS' heartrate plummeted and they told me to push him out ASAP as he was struggling so much, so my plan of gentle controlled pushing went to pot and I am sure I made the piles worse as a result. DS was fine though so all worth it.

Post birth again the general discomfort meant I didn't notice the piles particularly however now after 3 months they have totally gone by themselves.

Thanks everyone! These stories have reassured me! I know in the grand scheme of things I won't be thinking about them during labour but as it's my first baby I was worried what would happen to my backside if they were present during the time she chooses to make an appearance!

I'm going to try everything suggested and hopefully in the next few weeks they'll get a little better! 4 weeks to go so let's hope they clear up!

Good luck op.

Nobody likes suppositories and the first few times isn't great Blush but they really do help.

Try and just stick with it and I'm sure they will get better. Smile
