Where is your newborn going to sleep?

I'm due DC#2 in the summer and just starting to plan their arrival. DS slept in a Moses basket downstairs and a bednest upstairs with us until 4 months then he went in his own room. I don't think this combo will work this time as having him in a reachable place for DS downstairs means I can't ever leave them together (ie to pop to the kitchen, not long periods of time) so need another option and my DS hated the bednest so don't want to waste money hiring one again! Any suggestions?

A sling. The pram. By any which way possible!

To be honest, I just put her upstairs in her cot on a monitor with a sensor but appreciate this wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.

Pram downstairs, cotbed upstairs in your room. The pram will up higher, and the cotbed lasts newborn -5/6 years

DS2 is fine sleeping in a Moses basket downstairs with DS1 around, I just move it so it's out of his way. DS2 never went upstairs for naps as I follow the SIDS advice. It can be hard as DS1 likes to poke him so needs distracting.

I would never leave them together regardless, and tend to take DS2 with me, it's too risky as DS1 likes to 'help'! Upstairs he sleeps in a cot in our room and will do until six months.

Mine have always used carrycot or me for downstairs sleeping and co slept at night. This little one will be the same though probably also use a sling as have a very hands on partner this time so not on my own Smile

DS is here now, but in the lounge he slept on a boppy pillow next to me on the couch (he outgrew this fairly quickly though) or in his bouncy chair, in the bedroom he was supposed to sleep in a gliding crib next to my bed but he hated it so we ended up co sleeping and sometimes he lets me put him in his big cotbed which has since swapped places with the crib!

We're having bednest upstairs and moses basket downstairs. Bit worried that you've said your DS didn't like it as my dad has bought us one (was going to rent)! Ah well, will just have to see how it goes.

Is there a way of making your LO safe by putting in moses basket on the floor inside a playpen to keep DS1 out?

Artandco · 07/02/2015 08:42

Oh and I wouldn't not use Moses basket because of another sibling. We have a 16 months gap between ours and both napped on a sheepskin rug as small babies. It was still fine tbh. Eldest was taught quickly not to go near baby when asleep, and I just took one of them with me if I needed to be in a different part of home. Or just did things when they napped/ went to bed

co-sleeper cot upstairs, baby hammock downstairs. I will also just need to take DS1 with me, when going out of the room. We have a big open plan downstairs though, so that makes it easier.

fattycow · 07/02/2015 10:41

Playpen downstairs, in with us upstairs.

ChickenMe · 07/02/2015 12:52

I was about to start similar thread.
We have a standard cot for our room but I'm thinking naps in the day, can baby sleep in their pram? We are getting the Chameleon which has a decent bassinet. I've a sling as well but if sling not appropriate I dont want to leave baby upstairs? My mum said she did this with us (old fashioned prams in those days.
As the weather improves a nice nap in the garden in the pram should be good?

ChickenMe · 07/02/2015 12:53

Re weather I mean mine is due in Easter so not right now - in case anyone thought I meant now!!!

avocadotoast · 07/02/2015 17:11

Not a clue. Due in May so need to get cracking! Thinking of going for this - en.mokee.eu/mokee-woolnest-baby-moses-basket.html. It is pricey but PIL are buying us a cot (from the same manufacturer) so that balances it out somewhat. I'm not fully convinced though, although DH loves it.

Thanks everyone! Been doing a bit more research and think we might get a Sleepyhead to either put in Moses basket/co sleep with/use in the cot bed in our room then use the buggy carrycot for naps downstairs. Hopefully that covers all eventualities!! Anyone else seen the Sleepyhead? Not cheap but heard good things: m.johnlewis.com/mt/www.johnlewis.com/sleepyhead-deluxe-bed-guard-white/p231482924?un_jtt_v_pdp=yes&un_jtt_v_from_product=un_product_3#page_loaded

We bought a Sleepyhead for DC3. I absolutely love it. She naps in a Moses basket downstairs during the day, and at night sleeps in her Sleepyhead in the cot, next to our bed. Sometimes I've taken the Sleepyhead into our bed when she has been restless, and when I've stayed with friends I've just taken it for her to sleep in, and put it beside me on a double bed. I can't recommend it enough, DD loves hers (she sleeps far better than her older siblings dos at the same age) and it's so easy and portable. The only downside is that I really don't think it will last until 8 months as claimed, and she's only average sized. But you can get a larger one if you still feel you need it when they grow out of it - I'm hoping that we won't, as I have never used it for naps (delibarately, to try to avoid addiction!!).

squizita · 08/02/2015 11:13

Honestly 3 months ago I could have started a thread "AIBU to jack in my husband and marry my sleepyhead? " so much did I utterly utterly love it.
dd is getting big for it now but they do another size up for proper cot transition.

I just have it on the empty side of a large double bed (dh is on the spare room weekdays) or a mat on the floor next to the bed.

Treesandbees · 08/02/2015 13:10

Ha ha Squiz! If only I had known about them with my DS who was a shocking sleeper!! Glad to hear they help! I'm definitely going to 'invest' in one then!!
