Has anyone else having problems with smells?
Been trappaed in my bedroom for the past three months because the smell of our leather furniture makes me sick, the smell of wood is awful too can't go out in garden or in kitchen without throwing up.
Im 14 weeks and due on 21st April Please tell me this doesn't last right through pregnancy.

Wow poor you - that sounds awful. I couldn't stand the smell of garlic when pg but that was all. I think it's connected with the morning sickness thing so hope it passes for you soon.

EliBoo · 20/10/2006 16:47

It didn't last for me....and I had total aversion to a lot of smells, including, unfortunately, dh! (And he's a particularly un-smelly man - no idea what happened to my nose)

It started to ease around 15-16 weekss for me, and was a lot better by 20 weeks. I've had the occasional 'relapse' since, but nothing near as bad - am now 33 weeks.

Good luck, I know how awful this feels, hope it gets better soon for you too.

Whoowhoobewhooooooh · 20/10/2006 19:09

lawskenny

I was still like that at 14 weeks, but it's gradually eased off. Although I still get sick a couple of times a week, I don't have the terrible smell-thing any more (am nearly 21 weeks).

Everyone's different, but the odds are good that things will improve for you soon.

lawskenny · 21/10/2006 15:01

Thanks guys really hope things get better really want to enjoy being pregnant not feel miserable! Its so strange how sensitive you can get to things you never noticed before.
Fingers crossed!!

I've definitely got this (am 14 weeks at the moment). Walking through a town centre, all I can smell is ... well I'd rather not say. Our kitchen stinks, no matter how much I clean it. And the smell of tea makes me feel ill!
Am hoping it goes as the ms wears off.

tribpot · 22/10/2006 12:21

It should be wearing off soon - god, it's awful isn't it? We lived near a sugar beet factory, not a great smell at the best of times but in the first trimester it was horrific. I also couldn't go into the kitchen as the smell of food in the fridge (perfectly fresh food, not the dodgy stuff often to be found lurking at the back now I am not pregnant ) made me want to hurl.

Minnie00 · 23/10/2006 14:31

Lawskenny, I empathise! I'm 18 weeks and have been hypersensitive to smell since about 9 weeks - it been truly awful and at times has driven me to despair. My house just seem to reek, anything artificial makes me gag, being in the kitchen makes me retch, can't stand the smell of my DP (who is not a smelly person!), haven't been able to cope with the supermarket......the list is endless.

However, I've noticed over the past two weeks that it's starting to ease, although I'm still have more 'bad' days than 'good' days - and I just pray that it continues to lessen over the next 2-4 weeks!

bbpants · 23/10/2006 14:35

Am totally with you all on this one. I can't open the fridge without retching - I've worked out it's all the lovely, fresh organic veggies in there that are making me spew!

CurrantBun · 23/10/2006 15:59

Ooooh, I do sympathise! I had this from about weeks 7-10 quite badly: couldn't open the fridge without holding my breath, the smell of (especially) vegetables cooking made me rush to the loo, and I couldn't walk round the fruit and veg section in Sainsbury's without gagging.

It DOES ease off, I promise. How long it will last, though, I can't say - this seems to be down to each individual. Most things I was OK with pretty quickly again, but the smell of peppers cooking took a lot longer to deal with - it's only in the last few weeks that I've actually felt like eating some of the things that made me throw up in the first trimester and have had no ill-effects.

Hang in there!

Cassoulet · 23/10/2006 16:04

I got this and the most awful time was waiting in our local health food shop to get some ginger cordial for morning sickness. The smell of the usually lovely healthy food they had out was utterly appalling and I had to wait in the queue for about 10 minutes. By the time it was my turn I was retching; I explained hurriedly I what I needed and why and the guy immediately took me right to the other end of the shop, sat me down and lit an incense stick saying 'bit sensitive to smells as well, I bet' while he went off the get the cordial for me. I loved him and wanted to have his babies!

snowleopard · 23/10/2006 16:07

It was coffee for me - couldn't go near it. It stopped at about 16 weeks.

maltatheterrible · 23/10/2006 16:15

lawkskenny, totally sypmathise, at 14 weeks my husband bought me home a pollock (big slimy fish like a cod to the uninitiated, oh whoops, just insulted cod unintentionally) - and said, "you can gut that can't you darling?"
Usually I am rufty tufty and gut fish in seconds. I nearly threw up on his shoes.

It got better at 15/16 weeks. I have reapplied my fishmongering skills with gusto.

BIGlilBUBU · 23/10/2006 16:20

No it definatly stops. I know its awful, I couldnt open my fridge without feeling sick. My cat went through a stage of pissing in the house back then too, can you imagine how sick it made me feel. Thankfully he no longer does that,he's not a kitten anymore and has been done. But my god did it stink.

BIGlilBUBU · 23/10/2006 16:22

Oh I know the butchers shop made me want to throw up. The smells horrid anyway but definatly a hell of alot worse when preggas.

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 23/10/2006 16:26

You poor thing!

I couldn't stand the smell of fridges when pregnant -all those food smells mingling together, yuk! Also wasn't keen on smell of coffee or perfume.

Mine eased off with the nausea at about 14-16 wks so hopefully you might feel a bit better soon.

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 23/10/2006 16:28

oh, forgot to add that on one occasion (after he had been out drinking real ale the night before) DP farted and it made me throw up. Hes really proud of that too !

evenhope · 23/10/2006 17:48

I'm with you on this. Went into the printer room at work today and the electrical smells in there made me heave. I'm 19 weeks..

CurrantBun · 24/10/2006 11:07

BBSS, that is hilarious! I nearly PMSL!

tillsbluegirl · 27/10/2006 10:31

I can sympathise with this one too, although for me its anyting to do with toilets. Bleach, air fresheners...the lot. Public loos are a complete no-no, and worst of all, is the smell of wee. I'm usually to be found retching over the bath in the morning while having my first wee...and if thats not TMI for a first post...I don't know what is...lol!

bumperlicious · 30/10/2006 19:22

Yep, I'm getting this at the moment. Yesterday morning DH tried to give me a hug. He's not a smelly person, but just had that morning just got out of bed smell and I just retched and pushed him away and told him to go and have a shower as he was making me feel sick! Perfumes are getting me too, and the bin. At last I have a legitimate reason not to take the rubbish out myself!

Tatat · 30/10/2006 20:08

Like a few others, dh smell made me want to hurl. Only his deoderant though, not his farts like BBSL's earlier post

And wood too like OP, which was a little traumatic though as our home was like a building site all through my pregnancy. But only chipboard type wood normal timber was fine

And sorry to be the only voice of dissent in the ranks but mine went on until I gave birth.

My only tip- scratch and sniff a raw lemon. Wierd I know but it worked

StrawberryMoon · 30/10/2006 20:13

chip shops or anything greasy being cooked
damp(our kitchen) and any ambi purs or zoflora trying to disguise damp, but instead mingling with it!
cerruti 1664 aftershave actually made me vom...on managing director as poured dp's bottle down toilet!
damp wet autum leaves

all the way through..and still now..sorry..but that was me, you may be lickier

its ok, friend had vom reaction when pg everytime she heard ;the only way is up' by yazz!!!!!!!!!

StrawberryMoon · 30/10/2006 20:14

yeah agree on lemon antoher friend went mad on lemon flash disinfectnt as it overpowed all 'bad' smells!

Tommy · 30/10/2006 20:16

ugh - my pet hate was the dishwasher - when it was clean! The smell of all those detergenty things made me heave.

also the hot chicken counter in Tesco but I think that might have something to do with the hot chicken rather than my hormones

hang in there - it shouldn't last

tubismybub · 30/10/2006 20:21

Oh god i remember the problem with smells! We had a new carpet and sofa in the lounge and the smell made me sick to my stomach, i didn't sit in the lounge til i was about five months pregnant. Me and DH also had to sleep top and tail cause i couldn't stand the smell of whatever he had eaten for dinner on his breath! Didn't matter how much he brushed his teeth he still stank too me.
