Early pregnancy progesterone level - help please

Hi everyone

We just had a bfp which am excited about. Our last two pregnancies ended in an ectopic and misscarriage. I had a 21 day progesterone test done and it was 38. I'm wondering if anyone knows what the norm ranges are for early pregnancy? My gp won't monitor progesterone to see if I have a problem and if that's why my last two pregnancies failed as on long waiting list for gynaecology so don't know whether to go private to see if I should have progesterone suppositories as a preventative measure. Any advice would be appreciated as I want this pregnancy to work if there is any way I can influence it . Thanks x

Sorry i dont know anything about the supplements but i would ring your local early pregnancy unit, explain about your previous losses and see if they will monitor you. This can be a self referral, no need to see GP.
I was monitored in the early days of my current pregnancy with extra scans etc as my last pregnancy ended in MMC.
It was reassuring just seeing that the development v's gestation was correct and they can determine from early on if the pregnancy looks to be progressing normally.
Good luck

I'm confused by what you mean. "Day 21" progesterone is to measure whether you ovulate or not and Is part of fertility investigations. Is that the test you mean? Or have you had your progesterone tested since your BFP?

MuddyWellyNelly · 02/02/2015 21:02

Note also that Google will often say 9-47 is normal, but that's NG/mol and is used in the US, for example. In the uk it's nmol/L and the normal range is higher, I think about 30 upwards is ok.

MuddyWellyNelly · 02/02/2015 21:04

Sorry (cluster post!) that last post was about results indicating positive pregnancy, not ovulation! Congratulations by the way :)

misssmilla1 · 02/02/2015 21:17

Not sure if this is of any use to you, (as the measurements might be out because it was in the US) but I had my progesterone tested. The typical range levels they gave were:

follicular phase - 0.000-2.40
mid cycle - 0.540-1.45
luteal phase - 1.25-21.8
prog. supplement - 10.0-60.0
first trimester - 12.5-32.7
second trimester - 15.4 - 139
third trimester - 10.1 -255

BUT I don't know what units they're in, sorry! I do know I tested 15.7 at day 21 which they said was at the high end of the range for the luteal phase. Not sure if this was a good sign or not

I would go private if you think it could be a problem, but then I'm at the stage where I'd do anything to make it stick!

I'd had 4 miscarriages and after much research decided I had a lot of the symptoms of low progrsterone, I was under a consultant but went to the gp to get it tested it came back at 1 which the gp said was normal! I luckily had a consultant app shortly after that and she said that level inducated I hadn't ovulated but I'd been using ovulation stick and had got positives. The consultant re tested my blood that day just to get an idea of what was going on I never heard what the results were but she agreed to give me progesterone pessaries on the off chance it would help, I found out I was pregnant again a week later and the result is 7 and half months old and fast asleep upstairs. We went private for a consultation the the consultant bumped us up her nhs list definately worth it from my experience. Fingers crossed for a straightforward healthy pregnancy :)

I'm not sure what your levels should be, but wanted to chime in to say that I had fertility treatment to get pregnant. Conceived with IUI, on third and final attempt before moving on to IVF. All the patients at my clinic are given progesterone pessaries (Cyclogest) as a matter of routine, until the 12 week scan, regardless of progesterone levels. The thinking being that they won't hurt if unnecessary, but could make the difference in getting the pregnancy to stick. We were private patients, and I understand from reading on Fertility Friends that the reason GPs don't prescribe them is due to cost. So what's the grand cost the NHS won't stump up for? Well mine cost all of £150 from a private hospital pharmacy in Central London for 3 months supply. So peanuts for peace of mind (and in the context of what you pay for fertility treatment). To me they were a no-brainer.

Keeping fingers and toes crossed for you!

oops, sorry if that sounded crass lovemy, re the sticking, it wasn't meant to.Blush I was referring to the fact we tried for 18 months without anything happening and I ended up getting all the tests, referrals, drs apts etc I could just to rule stuff out as I wanted to be armed with info or know the livelihood of success etc

Lovemylittlebear · 03/02/2015 05:41

Hi everyone

Thanks ever so much for your messages, advice and stories. Going to a private fertility clinic today to get pessaries. In the last nine months we have been doing foresight preconception care, started accupuncture few months ago and then nutritionist more recently...this baby dust malarkey is financially crippling but so worth it if it will work out :)

The progesterone test was just a routine one to see if was ovulating but as we suspected low progesterone may be an issue with my misscarriages (possibly) I was just wondering if anyone knew more about healthy progesterone ranges etc and this has been a really helpful thread - thank you very much.

Baby dust to everyone - I have my fingers crossed for all of us xx

lovemy I also did accupuncture before conceiving dd and right through my pregnancy, I will never know if it was the pessaries, the accupuncture or if everything would have worked out anyway but I was willing to do anything. Best of luck :)

Number3cometome · 03/02/2015 10:08

My day 21 test showed a progesterone level of 10 - she advised me I had not ovulated.

I am now 16+3

Please don't panic! If you need progesterone supplements your doc will supply them. I did not have any.

Hope the visit to the clinic went well lovemy I'm also doing acupuncture and have been for the last 8 months, and my acupuncturist has been pimping chinese herbs (which haven't been a raging success from a digestion pov). Not sure if it was that, luck of the draw on timing, the fact I managed to up my Vit D levels to a decent rate, the massive amounts of supplements or the massive amounts of scans etc flushed any problems out, or the fact that the baby is a raging conservative and was waiting it out til we got married in october last year!

Now I'm over the hump (literally...) and preggers, I'm now worrying about the first proper scan etc. Seems I have swapped one lot of worries for another!

Lovemylittlebear · 04/02/2015 07:19

Mismilla that's fab news :) my bets on the conservative :) did you do forsight too then?

I had loads of right sided cramping again last night which is what happened last time I misscarried a few nights before...not during the first ectopic I had no symptoms other than heavy bleeding. I'm now shitting myself again....and feeling the old...why me card creeping up.

Has anyone any positive experiences of having ectopics or misscarriages and then getting pregnant again and having one sided pain leading to a successful pregnancy?

Thanks

Yes, lots of us pregnant ladies get one sided pain, I had it two weeks ago, was nothing, probably wind!

You'll be fine OP, try not to symptom spot and relax (I know easier said than done) Flowers and a non Mumsnety hug

Lovemylittlebear · 09/02/2015 19:27

Hi all sorry to jump on but need advice! I am on my 3rd pregnancy after 2 losses. I got my bloods taken at 3weeks+4days and had good progesterone levels of 69.7 nmol/L. However yesterday when i got my bloods retaken at 5 weeks+3days my levels had dropped to 48.4. Can someone offer me encouragement? On a side note first blood test was at 9.20 am and second was about 11.30am. Can time of day be a factor? On another side note my HCG was extremely high! 29161 IU/L. I have just got progesterone suppositories to take. Is it too late to take them when my progesterone has already dropped? It is still in the normal limits for where i am in my pregnancy. Thank you!
