How many sleepsuits & bodysuits in each size?

I should know this, we already have two children but it's been a while!

This time round I want my baby to be in sleepsuits day and night at first, not fussed on outfits for several weeks.

So far I've got 8 sleepsuits and 6 bodysuits in 1 month and 7 sleepsuits and 4 bodysuits in 0-3. How many do I realistically need?

I had:

  • 5 each newborn ( babygrows and vests)
-10 each in 0-3 months ( babygrows and vests)

Was plenty as newborn size only for approx 2 weeks . You don't need to change for bed at that age, just as long as it's clean. So we would average 2 a day, but the times changed depended on when dirty or we bathed, rather than every morning and every night.

We had x10 in 3-6 month stage also. Babies both wore just white baby grows day and night until 6+ months. With cardigan/ booties and hat.

We're slightly different as needed preemie clothes, early baby and tiny baby before newborn but I'll start from newborn.

Newborn (up to 9/10lb) - 15 vests and 9 baby grows
0-3 months - about 20 vests in mix of long and short sleeve (gifts hence why so many) and 12 baby grows

DS wears outfits every day and baby grow only at night but vest will be changed at least morning and night. Sometimes more for poo explosion or doing a pee mid-change Confused

Art - were they completely plain white or with patterns? I'm impressed! I like a variety of colours so it's not always a white wash I need to do for DS so DH and I clothes get done too!

Ladies. You make me feel a lot better! I though I had way too much especially when it comes to 0-3 and 3-6 months but it looks like I am not that unusual. though I decided to get a few onesies / sleepsuits too, but mainly because my little on is due mid Feb and my place tends to get quiet cold at night. I also find a I like the bodywrap (babygrow that doesnt go over the head) really nice as I wont have to "jank" it over the little ones head and can button it all the way from the front only.

roalddahl · 01/02/2015 09:58

Depends on whether you have a leaky baby and how often you can run the washing machine. DS got through about 4 sleep suits and vests each 24 hours as he was pretty leaky both ends so we needed way more than you have. But lots of babies aren't so much. You can buy more if you need to once they arrive.

Artandco · 01/02/2015 10:05

Murphy - yes all plain white. Reasons that plain white are cheap even good quality ones ( then I may have spend lots on fancy cashmere cardigans!), they can be boiled washed if needed, our bedding and towels are white so easy to throw them in with those. I'm also fussy about coordination! So white seemed easiest. Tbh by the time you add cardigan, and booties to baby, you only see a bit of their legs anyway.

Artandco · 01/02/2015 10:07

We also used reusable nappies, so could do a pre wash on those, then add any babygrow in, so washing needed every 2 days anyway due to nappies ( those were only white also!).

We have a white sofa, decor, rugs, bedding etc also... Dh jokes I was trying to blend the children in!

Murphy29 · 01/02/2015 17:51

Haha Art - camouflage babies! Between DH and DDog there's no chance we could have white! DH once dropped tikka masala sauce on cream carpet and instead of cleaning it he put his sock on it to 'hide' it from me but then trailed it through house on sock!! Confused

I'm aiming for 10 newborn (vests and sleep suits) and 10 0-3 Incase baby is huge. We're buying unisex as not finding out the sex so all gifts will be extra. Read somewhere your recommended to take 6 into hospital! I'll only be taking 3 as live opposite the hosp but seems like a lot 6

fattymcfatfat · 01/02/2015 20:34

I only took 3 into hosp when I had my dd....and im a fair bit away from hospital....never needed more and that included a 24 hour stay (had dd at 10.28, got released from hosp at 1 the next afternoon! ) with ds I did need more as I was stuck there for three bloody days afterwards but my mum just brought them up.... I will be getting about ten of each, in each size and if I need more will buy as needed!

nutmegandginger · 02/02/2015 11:18

I think it depends if you have a tumble dryer (and what time of year the baby is born). If you have a dryer then you need fewer clothes because you can get the clothes clean, dry and ready to wear again within a few hours, whereas if you're waiting for them to dry on a rack indoors that will take the best part of a day. Obviously the flip side of that is that if the baby has a big wardrobe, you don't need to do laundry quite as often!

We bought a dryer just before our baby arrived, and we found we only needed about 6 bodysuits and 6 sleepsuits in each size. We actually had more, because friends gave us lots of hand-me-downs, but we didn't really end up using them.

Obviously it also depends how much your baby turns out to sick up and leak through, but you aren't going to know that!

MiracleBaby2022 · 26/11/2021 16:25

@flowersforyou oh yes that does sound a lot! The advice varies, depending on where you read - but a newborn grows out of the first clothes so quickly some say 5 in newborn and 10 for all the larger sizes... Some babies are leakier than others too, so there's no way of really knowing exactly how many you'll need.

So far I've bought 6 long sleeve bodysuits for Tiny Baby and the same number of sleep suits (just in case she's born a bit early or is just tiny!). Then I've got a whole crazy range of bodysuits in the Newborn size because I first bought the envelope over-head style and only after washing them decided I wanted the wrap-front ones, so now I've ordered those as well.

I've lost track... but I'm now ordering the 0-3 months and maybe some larger sizes too since it's sale time!

MiracleBaby2022 · 26/11/2021 16:27

Whoops how did that happen! I was writing in a different section altogether and my reply appears here!?

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 26/11/2021 20:14

I bought about 14 x baby grows and vests in 0-3 months.

Had my little girl last week and I've now got 2 x newborn outfits and maybe 7 x up to one month baby grows and vests...(she was/is a bit small so needed emergency small clothes). The 0-3 swamped her!

MiracleBaby2022 · 26/11/2021 20:35

@Dipsydoodlenoodle ah congratulations! 💕How much did she weigh when she was born?

I'm imagining a similar scenario which is why I've already bought some in the tiny baby size as well as a couple of emergency early baby ones...

seaborgium · 26/11/2021 22:35

I would go for:

10 0-3 month sleepsuits
10 3-6 month vests
10 3-6 month sleepsuits
10 6-9 month vests

Don’t bother with 0-3 month vests. Vests need to be loose otherwise the baby will cry every time you pull a vest over his/her head.

DS was on the larger side and he outgrew the 0-3 month clothes in no time at all. We were given a lot of newborn clothes that were already too small when he was born.

CherryRedDMs · 26/11/2021 22:53

14 plus two for the changing bag.
@MiracleBaby2022 For the preemie I identified the shops sold preemie clothes and sent someone to buy them once it was clear he would be ok. You don’t need to have much in advance.

GuidingSpirit · 26/11/2021 23:28

@MiracleBaby2022 if your hospital has an M&S Food, you can get tiny baby things delivered if you are an inpatient. My baby was SGA and born at 38w weighing 5lbs 12oz. We only found out that she was SGA 2 days before she arrived so hadnt bought anything. We had quite a long hospital stay (for both of us!) so had her in newborn for 48 hrs whilst we got some tiny baby delivered. The NICU also had second hand things we could borrow if needed.

Ameteurmum · 27/11/2021 09:37

I have at least 10 in fist size/newborn and more in 0-3 because I’ve some hand me downs. Same for vests. They only have to throw up a couple of times for you to run low on clothes. Also whilst im too huge for nice clothes all of my £ has gone to my daughters wardrobe 😍

MiracleBaby2022 · 27/11/2021 09:52

@GuidingSpirit oh that's good to know! What kind of bag is it? I'm not sure I know what you mean, are they those cooling bags for lunches that M&S sell?

MiracleBaby2022 · 27/11/2021 09:54

@CherryRedDMs 14 + 2 sounds like a good idea and is what I currently have (ish). I'll do a proper count later.

MiracleBaby2022 · 27/11/2021 09:55

@seaborgium oh I already have tons of vests, but the majority are wrap-front ones so hopefully not too much of a problem getting dressed 🤞🏼

MiracleBaby2022 · 27/11/2021 09:57

@Ameteurmum haha don't blame you, and I'm sure your daughter isn't complaining either! 😆
