I thought I'd start a support thread for those of us being tested, just diagnosed or being treated for GDM.

So collapse on a sofa, grab a low carb snack and come and chat about blood tests, finger pricks, diet changes, medication and birth plans...

Four days!! It was hell. Sounds like you are in similar position. Keep pushing for c section. Sticking around indefinitely is pointless!

Ellizardo · 20/03/2015 07:16

Roger that, Working. Final dose didn't work either so it looks like I'm having the section this pm. Sucks being longest serving antenatal resident.

LIG1979 · 20/03/2015 07:26

You poor thing elizardo. that must be terrible! hope they sort out a sun - roof exit today.

mucous plug went today (36+0) so fairly hopeful I will not get to induction stage but panicked about him arriving soon. (Hoping I have a week or so till he arrives.)

longestlurkerever · 20/03/2015 09:26

Good luck with the c-section elliz. Nearly there and it'll all be worth it!

Good luck also LIG. Gosh, I am getting all excited and teary at these imminent babies. I am 30 weeks tomorrow. Quite a milestone but still feels like ages to go!

longestlurkerever · 20/03/2015 11:28

I can't seem to get the balance quite right. Last week my readings were v low and the mw said I should relax a bit. This week I've had some high readings (8.4 after lunch yesterday and a couple of just-under-target ones). Think I'll have to go back to being strict but I find I am getting very clumsy if I get hungry - I dropped my mug yesterday - it just fell clean out of my hands - and then later I did the same thing with a cup of raisins. I am normally a bit of a klutz but would more be knocking things over than just dropping them. Worried about driving etc.

LIG1979 · 20/03/2015 11:47

Lurker it could be the hormone surge you get early in the 3rd trimester. I found mine were quite tough to manage around 32 weeks but then got easier by around 34 weeks. Now they are tough because I am ill Angry but last week I could eat lots of crap and only go up to the low 7s.

Just went to the dr and I cannot get most of the drugs for my ear because of GD. Very frustrating!! The one they can prescribe has a manufacturing issue!

Hoping the baby doesn't come yet as not ready at all. But at least it means I hopefully won't have to get induced at 40 weeks. Any time after 38 weeks would be perfect. (Hoping the extension will be done internally and will have time to finish work and sort out things for the baby.)

longestlurkerever · 20/03/2015 12:36

Hmm maybe although tbh I think I have been a bit slack. Which are the M&S yoghurts you like? My treat is full fat yoghurt from the Turkish supermarket with a bit of fruit in. Not sure what it does to my levels though as have only had it as a snack so far. Have just had some after lunch with 3 big strawberries so will test in a bit and see if I got away with it.

Annoying about your ear. Is it an infection?

longestlurkerever · 20/03/2015 12:39

Have just had to sort out childcare for a work "party" at which I will be sipping water. Rock n roll.

WorkingBling · 20/03/2015 13:39

The M&S rhubarb fool is nice. V creamy and I think it's 11g carbs. I had it as a snack in the afternoon with some nuts or cheese or, bizarrely, if I wanted salty, crispy bacon strips.

Good luck for c section today!

longestlurkerever · 20/03/2015 13:43

6.5 after lunch and strawberry yoghurt. Phew!

minipie · 20/03/2015 16:23

Hi all. Haven't been on for a bit as DD2 has been born, at 36+6! Just like with DD1 my waters went then fast labour soon after. So I doubt it was GD related, more "this is just what my body does". However unlike DD1 she was bigger than average for dates (6lb 13) which I am grateful for in the circumstances and might I suppose be due to GD. She would probably have been huge if I'd gone to term...

Hope everyone else is progressing well!

ILiveOnABuildsite · 20/03/2015 17:10

Congratulations Minipie that is a great weight really. Enjoy your beautiful baby girl.

LIG1979 · 20/03/2015 17:27

Congratulations minipie in your little girl. I hope all is well.

longestlurkerever · 20/03/2015 18:17

Congratulations mini pie! Hope you're both doing well.

WorkingBling · 20/03/2015 20:27

Congratulations mini pie!

NoRoomForALittleOne · 20/03/2015 22:36

Just popping on to say congratulations to WorkingBling and Minipie. I hope that Ellizardo is also enjoying newborn snuggles.

I'm 34+2 today and still managing to keep baby in desire last week's threatened pre-term labour drama. I still haven't packed my bags properly Blush I think I'm in denial as I feel like I'll never have this baby. It's been such a long pregnancy between second trimester haemorrhaging, severe hyperemesis and now gestational diabetes it really doesn't feel like we will actually get a baby at the end of the process. I think that I'm so worried about 'counting my chickens before the egg has hatched' that I keep being lax in my preparations. I must be weird!

despite not desire. Stupid autocorrect!

Congrats Minipie!
Still waiting for section here after 24 hrs. Keep getting bumped by emergencies and feeling v down. Plus there's a woman who snores for Britain opposite me, honestly I can't believe the noises she makes are human. Been here now since Monday. At least if he's born today he'll be an Aries! And other upside is sugars are fine.

LIG1979 · 21/03/2015 07:48

elizardo - cannot believe you are still waiting. you sound like you are being very patient!

Noroom - having had 2 mcs before dd. I found it very difficult to prepare for her arrival. Even when she arrived it felt like a wierd dream for months. Similarly with this one I almost expected to have at least 1 mc before getting pregnant and going to term. I do think that influences my ability to organise myself as usually I am a big planner. That said I have now packed my bag and started dd's going away bag in case he turns up soon. I am looking on the bright side that it looks like my chances of them insisting on inducing me is pretty slim now.

My cold/cough/ear infection is sending blood sugars up and my weight down. Having lots of readings in the 7s even though I am really watching what I eat. Been sneaking in fruit between meals to try and up my vitamin c and taking lots of vitamins as I am sure not eating isn't helping my recovery.

longestlurkerever · 21/03/2015 08:34

Sorry to those feeling rubbish atm. So sorry you got bumped elliz. Really hope today is the day.

Sorry you have had such a rough ride noroom and lig too. I feel much the same. Three miscarriages meant I was very anxious till I got to about 20 weeks then gd diagnosis has brought a lot of that anxiety back again.

minipie · 21/03/2015 10:23

Just read back. Working congratulations on your daughter! Sorry you went through rubbish induction wait and then emcs but glad dd is fine.

ellizardo hope you have had your baby by now!

I wasn't monitored for blood sugars during birth. There was no time really - I gave birth about 1.5 hrs after arriving at hospital and most of that time was in the waiting room... They did monitor heartbeat but I didn't have to lie down thank god, a student midwife held the monitor in place instead. DDs sugars were checked over 24 hrs and she passed the first 3 then just failed the 4th which then meant another 24 hrs in hosp, argh, but it wasn't too bad as we managed to get a private room and my hospital has an M&S...

My tip: if you haven't done it prebirth, get on the hand expressing asap post birth (ask for 2.5ml syringes) so you can top up straight away if your baby isn't feeding perfectly so as to get past the blood sugar tests. You only need tiny amounts of colostrum (like 1ml every 2hrs) to keep the baby's sugar levels ok.

LIG1979 · 23/03/2015 05:44

elizardo - I also hope they got the baby out sooner rather than later.

congratulations mini pie.

We had a surprise on saturday night when ds arrived. like mini another very quick birth but we were in the ante - natal triage so didn't have far to go. Although did not think we would make it to the delivery suite and the pediatrician almost didn't make it and the midwife hadn't unpacked the delivery pack or done any paperwork.

We did not have any blood sugar monitoring during labour but that could just be timing. (Also did not need to worry about diet during labour as an hour of proper official contractions and about an hour from 4cm to delivery meant that i didn't get a chance to even collect my hospital bag let alone eat.) Post birth he had pre-feed readings and needed two consecutive ones above 2.2 to be able to leave. He failed the second but that was ~4 hours after feeding. I then kept handed ex pressing and almost forcing him to have some and he passes the next two. I did a random. blood glucose that was 5.9 and they were happy. So we could have left after that (~12 hours post birth) had ds not been pre-37 weeks and so we had to have additional checks till 24 hours post birth and so we are now hoping to leave tomorrow after seeing the pediatrician.

He was born at 36+2 and was 6lb 5oz so a good weight which I think is helping him. He does not seem premature at all. It is ironic that I would never have had the birth I wanted anyway even without the gd. At least the gd diagnosis gave me time to prepare mentally.

Tucked into dh's haribos earlier as a post birth treat and also demolished toast and jam with orange juice post birth and it has all felt incredibly naughty. Do intend to try and stick to a low gi diet in future as it does help my skin and will help prevent diabetes in the future but nice I can slack up a bit now.

Good luck everyone x

Hello,I forgot to come back and update! Callum was born by ELCS on 10th March weighing 8lbs 1.5oz. He had his blood sugars checked regularly until late that night when they stopped because they were happy with him. He is amazing Grin
