What does a newborn wear (I know this sounds stupid)?

So, I am starting to think about what to buy and I've looked online and in some shops and I'm a bit confused by what's on offer.

There seems to be 3 things (mainly) for newborns - vests (no sleeves, sometimes with poppers under the bum), bodysuits (mostly shortsleeve, with poppers under the bum) and sleepsuits (longsleeve, mostly with feet). But I keep seeing references to babies in babygrows - which of the above (if any?) are these ones?

My second question is, as the thread title suggests, what do they normally wear in the daytime (assuming I don't bother with "proper" outfits) just around the house/out for a walk in the pram/carrycot thing - is it a combination of the above and if so, which? I can see the sleepsuit working (on its own/with something else?), but what do they wear on their bottom half if they're in a body suit? Presumably for nighttime, it's a sleepsuit - do they normally wear something underneath this?

Sorry if this sounds ridiculous - this is my first, and I've never really had to think about this before! All advice much appreciated!

I must admit I got into the habit of calling sleepsuits/babygrows sleepygrows - it's kind of stuck since.

DD at 10 weeks has just about moved into 0-3 months (9lb 11oz), mainly for length as she's 9th centile for weight but 75th for length. The Asda things seemed the shortest - we had to move out of those about a week before the rest.

That said - I can still get away with newborn soft dresses so long as they aren't too short, as she's so slender (not sure how - me and DH aren't sylphlike at all...)

I think judging people for dressing their baby in babygros during the day is really quite unpleasant. What you dress your baby in is a matter of personal preference.

I wholeheartedly agree with the advice above that babygros with integrated scratch mitts and fastenings that open from neck to legs are best. I would avoid footless ones for little babies. I use tights a lot, I only use socks inside babygros or with tights - on their own I find they fall off.

You can also get baby bundlers/nighties that are like a very long sleeved t shirt. These are good at night as you don't have to fiddle about with poppers, you just pull it back down when you're finished. I also like zipped ones for speed; I've bought then in gap and Aldi and have heard Costco sell them too.

I aimed for the one layer more than me principle but find that as the baby is usually in the car seat or against me in a sling, that qualifies as a layer.

wrappedinablankie DD2 is in a fleecy sleepsuit during the day and a cotton one during the night. She does get changed. I just love the comfy look of sleepsuits. No bands around waist, easy to pop over for nappy change. And being winter it also has built in foot.

DD1 was a late March baby and we don't have pram suits for her. Just cardigans and hats. She was in cotton babygro day and night. We are in Hampshire though. Hasn't even snowed this year!

And you can judge all you like what I dress my baby in. They are cleaned and fed.

Sleep suits just look like nighttime wear to me and the fact they're called sleep suits doesn't help I guess lol.

DS was born in April and were also in Hampshire he didn't have any tight bands his first outfit was a velour dungaree set as it was the only thing in tiny baby I had at the time that fitted him, he then wore a little linen Humphrey's corner pj all in one.

All buttoned under the bum and down the legs so nappy change was a breeze just like at night time and they were all soft and non-restricting.

I wouldn't of put him in an outfit for bedtime, we get changed from pyjamas to clothes in the day not from pyjamas to another set of pyjamas so I changed him, but he only wore sleep suits at night time when I got him changed for bed and I stopped putting DS in sleep suits at 6-9 months anyway.

wrappedinablankie must be a different year then. it was definitely very warm when DD1 was born because we had some barely used jackets. They are too thin for DD2 as she was born in september. I actually have to buy new fleece and pram suits, and fleece jackets.

I do like dungarees and romper dresses. The thing I don't like most are tights and socks. We were given outfit with dresses for DD1 and I gave up very soon with them. And the socks keep falling off. That's why DD1 was barefoot during summer, and DD2 is now in fleecy sleep suits. Then I don't have to do tights and socks! By the time they crawl I will change them into outfits. It's just in my mind that's when they grow up enough to wear yhen.

It was April '12 he was born Smile

He didn't wear socks for a long while but at around 6 months he started to hate having his feet covered up so sleep suits where a no-no, if we went out he'd wear socks, but even now he'll pull his socks all of his clothesoff at first opportunity

For socks I've discovered that Asda do some really long socks in packs of 5 with "tiny steps" on the bottom in the non-slip latex stuff you get on the bottom of slipper socks. Because they're so long (they look like football socks) they're harder for DD to kick off.
