It's hard to know for sure until your baby is born and you know how big it is but it is unlikely you'll have so much it will go to waste! When I was expecting my first my mum was able to get boxes of nappies from work which cost around 10p per pack (they were being discontinued and went to staff sales). She got absolutely loads (dozens of packs = hundreds of nappies) and I thought I'd have loads left over. Nope!

You'll get a lot as presents soon after the baby is born. So I wouldn't go crazy at this point but you probably need more than you think. They are likely to have a number of outfit changes through the day thanks to sick and nappy mishaps. I have about a dozen or so first size (0-3months I haven't bothered with 'newborn' sizes but if you have a small baby then 0-3 will drown them!) vests and the same in baby grows. I have two 'outfits' but the baby will mostly be in babygrows. My mum has bought a load of 0-3 months stuff too but I haven't seen it yet so I don't know how much or what sort of things she has got. I've also started buying 3-6months basics like vests and babygrows (only 3-5 of each so far).

I wouldn't panic. The commercial world won't end once the baby is born and you'll be able to stock up afterwards if you need to. If anyone offers you hand me downs, take them - even if they're a bit well worn you'll be glad of them if the baby has one of those days where they've managed to puke up on every clean item you have!

Sorry not much help here im on number 3 and will probably still buy too much as it isall so cute!

Dont buy too much newborn though because unkess baby is tiny then they wont be in it for long! My ds was out of newborn in a week and I had bought loads! Dd got really poorly nit long after she was born and lost a lot of weight so she was in newborn until she was eight weeks but still had too much!

Oh last bit as pp has said babygrows! They practically live in them!

Personally I always used:

X5 newborn vests/ and sleep suits
X10 0-3 vests and sleep suits

That's enough as newborn size generally first few weeks only max. If larger baby even less. Then I figured if baby really puked/ hadn't washed the newborn ones they could easily wear the 0-3 just baggy until washing caught up, but can't say we needed to. If you have a really puky baby and using all 5 every day, then can easily buy more after.

I also just brought plain white babygrows in newborn, 0-3, and 3-6 month size. Meant all can go in same white wash, can wash high temps and stains comes out if any. They are cheaper also. ( but still about £100 just on babygrows to last newborn-6months). Then can buy nice cardigans/ hats and booties to go with them.

Nappy wise I would by more than say 100 of each size. As might change sizes quicker than you think. Although have you considered reusables? The one size fits all last newborn- potty trained, and just popper smaller/ bigger than on like normal nappy. About £300 will get you 25 of them. Very cost effective, especially if you have another child ( think its £1600 average cost of disposable nappies per child)

Amazon is good. If you join Amazon family you save up to 20% I think, and next day delivery, so good if you suddenly want more of something

Thanks all feel better now I'll get a few first size and then a few 0-3 n see how I get on. Smile

I would avoid buying too many nappies to start with because you don't know what size you will need. My baby never fitted into Tesco, Boots or Sainsbury's size 1 so we ended up giving those away. Pampers are bigger than most supermarket brands.
If you do decide to use reusables (I switched after 6 weeks but some people start from newborn) remember they will be bulkier so you might need bigger clothes.

Buy shit loads of maternity pads. I bought what I thought would be enough and ended up sending DH to the shop while I was still in hospital to get more. He had a lovely chat with a spotty teen shop assistant about his wife's bleeding after birth apparently :D

I don't even know where to start.

Going to go to Aldi and buy stuff today though.

Doesn't help that I'm a terrible shopper. In that I look at things several times before deciding if it's a good buy..... can see me panic buying ha ha ha

The only thing I've decided on is not buying a gazillion nappies. We've got aldi/morrison/boots nearby so will buy aldi to start but having read all about leaky nappies/different brands fit better than others etc will buy as we need til we find the right fit. (Hoping aldi!!! Do most of our shopping there. I ? Aldi)

But I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise oh great and powerful wise ones of MN Grin
